Fab food for fab abs

www.pexels.comWhether you like to run, row, dance or hike, you won’t get fab, happy abs if you don’t think about the food you eat as well as the exercise you take.

You can, of course, add ab specific exercises into your routine, but if you eat gut-busting snacks and meals, not only will you nourish your body, but you will also have more success with getting a toned tummy, and bloating will be a thing of the past.

Resist the urge to skip meals, or take on more protein shakes and bars, and instead add these foods to your diet and we think you will love the results, and the taste too.

Water
If you want a healthy, trim tum, you need to drink water. Try and get the recommended eight glasses a day if you can, and also think about drinking warm water with lemon first thing, as this will kick start your digestive system and help flush away toxins, and while it might not have your usual caffeine kick, it will work.

Apples
An apple a day does so much more than keep the doctor away. Apples are packed with goodness, they are great as an on the go snack, they give you a sweetness hit, a burst of vitamins and with fibre to boot, they are tummy lovers however you look at them.

Bananas
Many of us underestimate bananas but do so at the peril of your abs. Bananas are full of the potassium that gets rid of sodium as we wee, so by eating them you ease bloating and as they are filling, you won’t need to hit the tummy expanding biscuit tin mid-afternoon.

Asparagus
Asparagus is a natural diuretic which means to can help ease the water retention that makes tummies round, as well as acting as a prebiotic so that healthy, helpful gut bacteria can grow and flourish. This versatile vegetable is also packed with insoluble and soluble fibre which aids good digestion and leaves your abs happy and flat. Perfect with fish and chicken, asparagus can be steamed or boiled and are also great with salads and roasts.

Fennel
While fennel isn’t the best tasting food out there, it has a wide range of ab loving benefits. Bloating, constipation, gas, cramps, and inflammation are all signs of trouble, but fennel can help to ease all these issues so you feel more confident and comfortable.

Avocado
This green goddess is high on our list of ab superfoods and for good reason. As well as being jam-packed with skin-loving vitamin E and essential fats, it is great for your abs thanks to the high levels of naturally occurring oleic oil which helps with inflammation. Peel, stone and slice, then add your avocado to salads, smoothies, toast, crackers or just eat it on its own, but whatever you do, be sure to eat it and your tummy will thank you.

Blueberries
Blueberries are often overlooked for bigger, redder berries, but they are full of the powerful antioxidants that speed up fat burning, which is exactly what we want. Simply stir into porridge (with a banana), pop in pancakes or blend with almond milk, mango, and spinach for an instant super smoothie and fab abs!

Oats
We would suggest getting more wholegrain oats into your daily diet as they can help improve your gut health and speed up your metabolism. Oats come with the soluble fibre that helps soak up water and slows down digestion. This means you feel fuller, for longer and won’t feel the need to snack between meals, something that can make your tummy wobble. Soluble fibre is a prebiotic and as such it feeds the good bacteria in your tummy so it stays healthy and helps control blood sugar levels and blood pressure. So, start your day with porridge, yogurt, and blueberries, and if you make banana flapjacks your tummy will be happy for longer.

If you do experience ongoing tummy problems, speak to your GP and just make sure things are all in working order.

Easy ways to relax when stress builds up

www.pexels.comWhile the idea of switching off and doing nothing sounds like bliss, being able to fully power down isn’t always possible, but if we don’t slow down from time to time we can burn out and that’s no good for anyone.

While it is hard to jet off and lie on a beach (or impossible) there are ways to tweak your routine so you can get back on the right track.

Sip Green Tea
Forget coffee and cola, if you want to ease the stress of life, sip on a cup of green tea. This is a good source of L-Theanine, a chemical that helps relieve anger, so boil the water, pour it out, and once it has cooled down, take a soothing sip and sit back and relax.

Meditate
You don’t need a mountain retreat to feel the benefits of meditation. Five minutes of peace in a quiet, comfortable spot will allow you to concentrate on your breath, and as you focus on the now, you will feel anxieties float away. Remember, the more you do it, the better you will feel.

Breathe
There is no easier way to relax than by taking slow, deep breaths. Doing this can also help lower your blood pressure and heart rate, and as you focus on each breath going into, and out of your mouth and nose, you will balance your mind and body, so it’s got to be worth a try?

Run Cold Water on Your Wrists
When stress hits, run cold water on your wrists and behind your ears. There are major arteries under the skin in these places on your body, so cooling them down can help calm you down too.

Brush Your Hair
We aren’t saying you look a mess, but repetitive actions such as running a brush through your hair, washing the dishes, or knitting can help your body relax. Give it a go, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Spend Time Alone
Just five minutes alone can help you collect your thoughts and clear your head. Whether it’s a meeting room at work, a bench in the park or even in your bathroom with the door locked, do it and be at one with yourself.

Do Some Yoga
The Vipariti Kirani yoga pose involves lying on the floor and resting your legs up against a wall, using blankets to balance if you need them. Not only does this give your body a really good stretch, but it helps create peace of mind too. If you enjoy this, why not take a class and feel all the benefits yoga has to offer on a regular basis?

Walk it Out
When you’re feeling overwhelmed or having trouble focusing, a walk around the block can have a big impact. Each walk will give you the benefits of alone time, physical activity, and a few minutes to gather your thoughts so you return to your desk feeling refreshed and focused.

Write It Down
‘Dear Diary’ doesn’t belong in the past and is certainly not just for teenagers. Putting pen to paper and journaling can get your emotions out of your head and help you make sense of things that seem too big right now. Try writing every day and you will soon find yourself with a new habit, a really positive one.

Dance to your favourite song
Beyoncé, Bieber or The Beatles, it doesn’t matter who it is, but breaking free and having a really good dance, with some singing thrown in too, can totally set you free. Do it outside, inside, on your own, with others – it doesn’t matter, just do it and feel the weight of the world melt away.

How to Take Care of Your Shellac Nails

How to Take Care of Your Shellac Nails
Photo by Analia Baggiano on Unsplash

In our experience, this is one of the most popular times of year for shellac manicures – people are jetting off on their holidays and want their nails to look perfect poolside, without having to paint them on the daily. With that in mind, we thought we’d look at five tips to help you to keep your shellac nails in tip top condition so they loo just as good on the plane home as they did on the way out.

Sunlight

While we usually advise against too much sun exposure, giving your shellac nails a dose of UV from the sun will actually help to keep the polish hardened and less likely to peel. Use a little Dermalogica Protection 50 Sport SPF50 on the backs of your hands if you’re worried about the sun’s harmful rays.

Oil

Keeping your shellac looking good relies on having healthy nails underneath, so we’d recommend suing an oil such as Nailtiques Oil Therapy. The vitamin-enriched formula will soak into the nail to rehydrate and treat the nail and nail bed beneath.

Gloves

If you’re doing last-minute household chores before you jet off on your hols, we strongly recommend wearing rubber gloves to protect your manicure. Domestic cleaning products are usually pretty skin-safe, but they can still strip colour or gloss off of a shellac manicure, leaving your nails looking dull or discoloured.

Tanning

If you’re planning to have a spray tan or use a gradual tanning lotion, we strongly recommend that you do this before you have your shellac mani as many tanning products can actually stain, especially if you opt for a light colour. The last thing you want is orange-stained nails making you look like you smoke 100 cigarettes a day!

Maintain

If you want to give your nails a bit of DIY maintenance while you’re away, Orly Breathable Treatment And Shine Clear is something you should definitely pack in your suitcase. The breathable formula allows oxygen and hydration penetrate to the nail allowing it to stay moisturised, while the polish itself hardens to maintain your mani.

Find your fitness this summer

It is never too late to get in shape!www.pexels.com

Believe us, we have been there.

Whether you are starting out, or are already on the road to fitness, why not start a mid-year fitness plan that will help you feel good and look great, today, tomorrow and in the future.

It’s OK to feel self-conscious
You might not think it, but most people in the gym, at a class or on the netball court, will feel some level of self-consciousness and vulnerability, at some point.

Do not let this put you off!
Remember everyone had to start somewhere, and those people who look like they are in control will have felt just as scared as you at some point. Own it! Wear something you feel good in, get some great trainers and see this as a positive step ahead that will make a massive difference to your life!

What did you say?
Ever thought about how you talk to yourself? Let’s be honest, most of us will use kind words with family, friends and even colleagues, but negative ones with ourselves and that isn’t going to do your fitness confidence any good.

I am too fat, too old, too out of shape to do this, aren’t phrases that will help and you don’t need those voices in your head. If you reframe it and see that you are strong, determined and making great progress, this is far more beneficial and in time, your mindset will change. Be kind, be consistent and be patient, it will be worth it.

Find something you love
If you are going to exercise, you need to do something you love, otherwise you won’t keep it up. For some of us it’s aerobics and step, others like aqua classes, running, rowing and salsa are all options, as is walking, Pilates and basketball.
It doesn’t matter what you do when it comes to fitness, but getting your heart beat up, being a little hot and sweaty and taking your body out of its usual comfort zone, will help you more forwards.

Have a goal
Maybe you want to tone your tummy, be able to run a 5k charity race or feel good about your arms, whatever it is, have a fitness goal and work towards it. You don’t have to be perfect, you simply need to do your best and work towards your goals with enjoyment, positivity and determination.

Focus on you, not a screen
This isn’t the time for a comparison war, it is the time to focus on you and what you want to achieve. Social media can really impact us when it comes to exercise and body image and make us feel old, out of shape, slow and wanting to quit. Let’s be honest here, those IG images are often filtered and manipulated, so it’s not the reality of any situation, including yours.

It is totally fine to be inspired by someone else and to aspire to be the best version of you, but don’t be fooled that what you see online needs to stop you from chasing your dreams. The best thing to do, is stay in your lane and if something on social media makes you feel bad, sad or mad, stop following and get on with your life.

Reward yourself
Each time you go for a run, take a dance glass, play football or swim 30 lengths, give yourself a pat on the back and celebrate all your fitness wins.

We are excited to see where your exercise journey will take you, and we know you’ve got this, so go for it.

Going Travelling? These are the Beauty Must-Haves that Should Make it into your Backpack…

Going Travelling? These are the Beauty Must-Haves that Should Make it into your Backpack...

If you’re lucky enough to be planning to go travelling this summer, you’re probably already going to be thinking about what you plan to pack in your bag. When doing long-term travel, space is at a premium in your cases or backpack and while you want to make sure you have the essential and stay looking good for as long as possible, taking the entire contents of your bathroom cabinet with you just isn’t practical. Today, we’re looking at which products you should consider packing for your backpacking trip so that you have everything you need, without going overboard!

Hair

Unless you’ve got closely cropped hair, remembering to take hair bands and clips is an absolute MUST, because you will want to put your hair up at some point in your trip. In terms of keeping your hair clean and in good condition, we strongly suggest you switch to co-washing – which is short for “conditioner-only washing.” It means skipping shampoo and relying solely on conditioner, whether you’re a daily or a weekly washer. This means that at a bare minimum, you’ll only need to pack Dermalogica Daily Conditioning Rinse in order to keep your hair looking fab while you travel.

Body

Washing while travelling can be tricky, and you’ll probably find yourself getting clean in a few less-than-spa-like places! Taking something like Dermalogica Conditioning Body Wash means that your skin won’t dry out, so unless you have super-dry skin, you’ll be able to forego the moisturiser stage. You will, however, need to take sunscreen with you, so opting for a multi-functional product like Decleor Protective Hydrating Milk SPF30 Body while you’re away will mean that your skin gets a wash of hydration while you protect yourself from the sun.

Face

Let’s face it, a fifteen step Korean skincare regime just isn’t going to be practical if you’re living out of a suitcase for weeks on end, so the key to packing for your skin is to keep the steps to a minimum and find as many multi-functional products as possible. If you’re lucky enough to have ‘normal’ skin, we’d recommend just a simple cleanser, such as Elemis Soothing Chamomile Cleanser and a moisturiser with built-in SPF, like Decleor Protective Anti-Wrinkle Cream SPF30 Face.

Bonus

As a bonus, we thought we’d also tell you about Elemis Tea Tree S.O.S. Spray, as we think this is an absolute must-have when travelling. It’s a spray containing Australian tea tree essential oil in purified water. Tea tree oil is nature’s own antiseptic, having powerful anti-bacterial and antiviral properties, and it can be used to deodorise the feet or treat fungal infections, treating bug bites, cleaning cuts and spots or even for helping to heal spots. It’s one of those products that once you buy it, you’ll end up using it for everything!

How to Deal with Ingrown Hairs

How to Deal with Ingrown Hairs

For many of us, ingrown hairs are a fact of life. It doesn’t seem to matter what we do, or how we remove hair, the ones which grow back just end up ingrown. According to Wikipedia “Ingrown hair is a condition where a hair curls back or grows sideways into the skin. The condition is most prevalent among people who have coarse or curly hair. It may or may not be accompanied by an infection of the hair follicle (folliculitis) or “razor bumps” (pseudofolliculitis barbae), which vary in size.”

So, how do we deal with ingrown hairs when they do occur? Follow these tips to help your body to heal properly:

Exfoliate

Ingrown hairs occur when dead skin cells clog your hair follicles, causing the hair to grow inwards instead of outwards. The key to stopping this from happening is to exfoliate as often as possible. The Elemis Body Detox Skin Brush is ideal for dry brushing and keeping your skin exfoliated, while the natural cactus bristles help to reduce the appearance of cellulite by improving circulation and softening the skin.

Change Your Razor

One of the best ways to prevent ingrown hairs, after exfoliating, is to ensure you’re using a new, sharp razor every time you shave. Disposable razors are intended to be single use and although they may seem like they’re still removing hair on use two or three, reusing them again and again could be doing your skin more harm than good. They also harbour bacteria, which can cause infections.

Use Shaving Cream

When it comes to shaving, we’ve seen it all – people using hair conditioner, soap or just water when shaving, but this is a bad idea. Shaving cream will give an extra slip to the skin ensuring blades don’t drag, and meaning you can avoid irritating any sensitive spots. Opt for an alcohol-free, sensitive formula, to prevent drying out your skin like Elemis Ice Cool Foaming Shave Gel.

Direction

When you shave, you should always shave in the direction of the hair growth. Shaving against the grain will cause your hair to be cut at an angle, making it sharper and more likely to grown back into the skin, causing painful and unsightly bumps.

If All Else Fails…

If you follow all of these steps and still find yourself with an ingrown hair, DON’T be tempted to squeeze it. It ma look like a spot and be begging to be squeezed, but this will force bacteria further into your skin and can even push the hair in the wrong direction. Most ingrown hairs clear up by themselves, with a little help from Elemis Tea Tree S.O.S. Spray to kill any bacteria, but if you must pick, try to use a sterile needle to lift the hair out of the follicle to ensure it’s removed properly.

Get to grips with rosacea

While people don’t tend to talk about it much, the skin condition rosacea is a problem for more people than you would think. www.pexels.com

The acne-like inflammatory condition tends to affect the cheeks, forehead, chin and nose, and while symptoms come and go, it can be a real pain, on many levels.

This is classified as a chronic condition that predominantly affects fair-skinned women between 40 and 60, but men can suffer too and for them it could be more severe as well as harder to talk about.

Typically, rosacea begins with the skin turning red and flushed for a short time. This isn’t the end of things, as this can be followed by uncomfortable stinging, ongoing dryness, blemishes plus increased visibility of the blood vessels which makes skin look almost bruised. There is also the chance of small bumps, pus-filled spots and uncomfortable inflammation on the eyes and eyelids.  Rosacea can persist for a long time and the severity tends to fluctuate from person to person.

While no one really knows what causes rosacea, certain triggers such as stress, excessive light exposure, being out in extreme weather, drinking alcohol and caffeine,  and eating spicy foods, can make it worse.

To date there are no tests to diagnose rosacea, but anyone who has persistent symptoms should talk to their GP because the sooner it is identified, the sooner treatment can start. GPs examine the skin, as well as considering lifestyle factors and the impact it is having on the patient, and then looks for the best approach to get things under control.

Topical creams and gels can be prescribed and if the affected skin is really bad, it might be that a course of antibiotics is needed. In some cases, laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment that involves beams of light being aimed at the visible blood vessels in the skin so they shrink and become less obvious.

For many people, lifestyle changes can help manage the condition and many patients find that avoiding their known triggers, be that alcohol, coffee, wine or the midday sun, they feel better and their skin improves. By taking control of your lifestyle you are taking control of the situation and over time hopefully your skin will become calm and healthy once again.

We would suggest writing a record of your flare-ups and see if they match up to anything you have done differently – maybe had more curries, been really stressed at work or had one or two glasses of wine more than usual.

Skincare is also important, so forget soap and water, as they won’t cut it. Go for products designed for sensitive skin and more importantly, ones that works for you. Make sure you cleanse, tone and moisture twice a day and use a good quality sunblock all year round.

For many people, it’s not just the irritation that’s the problem, but the physical and mental impact too. For people who really do struggle with their appearance, counselling and support can be an option worth considering. It is hard sometimes, but try not to let your thoughts and worries take over, and remember what you see in the mirror probably won’t be what others see as they talk to you and they won’t even notice it.

What we would say is, that millions of people around the world suffer with this condition, and while it isn’t fun, you aren’t alone. We know that it can cause embarrassment and insecurity, and would suggest checking out the British Skin Foundation who offer more information.

Happiness hacks to feed your mind

Tired? www.pexels.com

Overwhelmed?

Tearful?

Anxious?

We know how it is, and send out group hugs.

While 21st century living gives us so many more opportunities than ever before, it can also have a downside when it comes to your mental wellbeing.

Expectations mean we are switched on 24/7, and let’s face it that just isn’t possible.

We know that life can be busy, but we have some easy happiness hacks we hope will free your mind and allow you to relax and chill out, rather than being in fight or flight mode all of the time, which is totally exhausting and unsustainable.

Just breathe
This sounds simple, but when was the last time you sat back and breathed deeply? Bet you can’t remember. When you have read this post, sit down, close your eyes, count to five, breathe in and then out. Focus on that breathing, feel the air go into your body and then go out again. By doing this for just five minutes you can focus and regroup and when you breathe better, you will feel better.

Talk it out
After breathing, comes talking. We don’t mean gossiping, but opening up and letting others know you are having a hard time. A problem halved is more than a problem shared and those around you will want to support and love you. You might feel that you are burdening family and friends, but by holding onto toxic thoughts and ideas, you will get dragged down and nothing will change. Pick up the phone, or ask your bestie to meet you for coffee and you will be surprised by how much better you feel by being honest.

Ditch your screen
We bet just thinking about this is hard, but screens can take over your life and drain your happiness and also remember people only post their best bits. Playing games, using social media, texting, and streaming TV might fill time, but if you put your device down you will find happiness somewhere else and life might just get better. Maybe check in with Facebook once a day, turn emails off after 6pm and call friends rather than using WhatsApp.

Bigger picture perspective
We often get caught up in the here and now, but what is bothering you in this moment isn’t going to last. Look at problem areas and see if you can break those down into more manageable chunks and deal with one at a time. If work is too much, what can you push back on and delegate? If the house is a mess, get others pulling their weight. What might feel enormous now, will be gone in no time if you address it and then move on.

Take some exercise
Social media, long hours and demanding careers often leave us time poor which means exercise gets dropped. This is a big mistake. Exercise will raise your heart rate, clear your head, trim your waist and the resulting endorphins will pump feel good vibes around your body. It doesn’t matter what you do, but running in the park, racing on your bike or swimming in the sea will is so much better than sitting in a dark office hour after hour.

Be kind
We all have off days, but if you can generally be kind to those around you, it will help with your happiness. A compliment, holding the door open for someone, a simple smile and letting another driver go past, are all small things, but they add up and you will both be happier as a result.

Do something just for YOU
Go on a date, take a walk, or have a manicure and pedicure and treat yourself. You work hard and think of others all the time, so you need to top up your reserves and if you do this on a regular basis, your happiness levels will soar.

See the bright side
If nothing else, remember to laugh. In the bigger picture, life is really short so try to make the most of it and enjoy every single day.

Let us know your happiness hacks, we are all ears.

Five Hacks for Clearer Skin

Five Hacks for Clearer Skin
Royalty-Free Image

If you’re one of the millions of women in the UK who has acne or spot-prone skin, you probably have a skincare routines that is almost hard-wired into your brain to help you keep your spots at bay. There are, however, a lot of things that can contribute to breakouts, many of which you may not have even considered, so we thought we’d put together a list to give you a gentle reminder of what not to do.

Don’t Touch!

Every time you touch your face, you transfer dirt, oil and other nasties which can all make spot breakouts significantly worse. Keeping your hands clean at all times is nigh-on impossible, unless you use anti-bac gel every five minutes (trust us, your hands will NOT love you for this…) so keeping your hands away from your face is best practice. Dermalogica Clearing Skin Wash will help remove bacteria from your face.

Clean Your Phone

Prepare yourselves for a statistic which will make you want to live in a sterile bubble – it’s estimated that your phone screen carries around TEN TIMES MORE germs than the average toilet seat. Disgusting, huh? Every time you put your phone to the side of your face, you risk these bacteria transferring onto your face, so make sure you give it a thorough clean on a regular basis.

Change Your Sheets

According to various surveys, the average person changes their sheets every 24 days, although for some people is more often and for some is less. The general rule of thumb is that we should be changing our sheets every 7 days, because of the amount of sweat, skin cells and bacteria which are captured by our sheets and pillow cases, so changing your sheets regularly is essential if you want to avoid breakouts.

Use a Probiotic

Much of our internal health is dictated by our gut health, and scientists are now linking thinks like obesity, type 2 diabetes and even dementia. As such, your skin is also affected by your gut biome, so one of the simplest ways of getting a handle on your complexion is by adding a probiotic to your diet. Just one pill or drink per day can make a huge difference to your skin’s health.

Clean Your Brushes

Every time you sweep make-up onto your face using your brushes and sponges, you also sweep bacteria transfer onto your face. Keeping them regularly cleansed is SO important for making sure you don’t infect your skin or give yourself a breakout of spots. Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel is great for cleaning your face but can also be used to cleansed your brushes without damaging a potentially expensive investment.
