Looking after your hair, and doing it properly, is about so much more than washing it with any old shampoo and conditioner. Depending on your hair type, there could be a number of different products you could use to ensure your hair stays in the best condition possible. That’s why L’Oreal Professional offers a number of different ranges for individual needs. Here are five products from the various collections to help you to choose the right one for you:

L’Oreal Professionnel Serie Expert Absolut Repair Gold Shampoo

If you have dry and damaged hair then this is the shampoo for you. It’s a lightweight, restructuring shampoo with a gentle formula for use on damaged hair and contains protein and gold quinoa. The formula reduces damage on the surface of the hair without leaving any residue on the hair shaft, giving you hair which feels healthy and not at all weighed down.

L’Oreal Professionnel Serie Expert Blondifier Gloss Concentrate Treatment

If you have bleached or highlighted hair, you’ll know that some products can leave it looking brassy and unnatural. L’Oreal Professionnel Serie Expert Blondifier Gloss Concentrate Treatment is an intense concentrate treatment for sensitised, bleached and highlighted blonde hair. It helps to smooth the cuticle of the hair to make it instantly look shinier, smoother and stronger. It also strengthens the hair fibre, making it more resistant to avoid hair breakage.

It works in minutes to leave you with super silky smooth locks. The mask takes advantage of its key technology, Polymer AR to wrap the hair fibre with a special anti-humidity shield, keeping it smooth and glossy while stopping frizz in its tracks.

L’Oreal Professionnel Serie Expert Pro Longer Instant Ends Filler Concentrate Treatment

It’s formulated with a high concentration of Filler A-100 Technology, to instantly strengthen and volumise the hair fibre internally, whilst amino acids strengthen externally.

It’s perfect for flat and limp hair, and will ensure roots are lifted so your hair can breathe.

Top to Toe Nourishment from Pure Beauty

There are a number of different things that can leave us feeling depleted, whether that’s a physical or mental feeling. Stress, illness, not eating a balanced diet, even dehydration, can all be contributing factors to feeling drained, and this can have a knock-on effect with your skin. If your skin is lacking nourishment, it could be dry, lacklustre and dull, not just on your face, but your whole body. That’s why we’ve curated a list of five key products which will nourish your skin from top to toe:

Elemis Superfood Midnight Facial

Night creams are perfect for skin which needs a lot of nourishment as they usually have at least eight uninterrupted hours to work. They also don’t have to play nicely with makeup or other cosmetics, so have a richer texture – just like this prebiotic overnight sleeping night cream from Elemis. It contains camu camu and cocoa butter, which are packed with vitamin C and omega 6 and 9 fatty acids to drench the skin in intense hydration and nourishment.

Aromatherapy Associates Inner Strength Nourishing Body Treatment

This body treatment is designed to nourish both your skin and your soul, with a heady mix of aromatherapy oils. It contains mind-decluttering clary sage, fortifying cardamom and focusing frankincense, which will help to focus your mind while the deeply nourishing and moisturising cream works on your skin. It will leave your skin feeling soft and supple while also giving you a mental boost.

Evolve Organic Beauty Bio-Retinol Gold Mask

You don’t have to be going through a massive life event for your skin to feel depleted;  sometimes, just getting older is enough to do it. Ageing skin gradually loses the ability to create collagen, which is what keeps the skin looking plumped, and ageing skin also tends to be drier. This mask from Evolve Organic contains a natural retinol-like plant extract from bidens pilosa, that works on the skin to deliver the same rejuvenation and cellular renewal benefits as retinol, but without any irritation. It also contains organic argan oil and rosehip oil to really nourish and moisturise your skin.

SkinCeuticals Emollience

SkinCeuticals have drawn from some of the most potent ingredients in nature to create this moisturising product for very dry and sensitive skin. It contains sesame seed oil, grape seed oil, rosa canina fruit oil, macadamia seed oil and mango seed butter, amongst other things, which combine to create a moisturiser which is deeply nourishing and can be used on the entire neck, face and chest. It restores and maintains skin moisture levels, and absorbs quickly and evenly.

Color Wow Money Masque

If your skin is suffering from a lack of nourishment then there’s a good chance that your hair is, too. That’s where Color Wow Money Masque comes in! This deeply hydrating hair mask, designed to achieve silky, supple, expensive-looking hair and is one of the best loved products among celebrity hair stylists who need to make sure that their clients look perfect. It contains blue sea kale, a mediterranean sea kelp/algae blend and a hydrolyzed vegetable protein complex which penetrates deep into the hair’s cuticle to deliver smooth, glossy hair without the need of heavy moisturisers.

Five Body Skin Issues and How to Deal with Them

Five Body Skin Issues and How to Deal with ThemPhoto by Sora Shimazaki

The skin is the largest organ in your body, with the average person having over 22 square feet of it! And while most of us focus on the small area of skin on our faces, there are plenty of issues which can besiege the much larger area of skin on our bodies too. With this in mind, we’re taking a look at some of the things which may bother you and how you can try to solve them:

Keratosis Pilaris

Keratosis pilaris is a common, harmless skin condition that causes dry, rough patches and tiny bumps, often on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks or buttocks. The bumps usually don’t hurt or itch but the appearance does bother a lot of people who suffer from it. The Medik8 Smooth Body Exfoliating Kit contains a Smooth Body Scrub, Smooth Body Mitt and a Smooth Body Lotion which are specifically designed to tackle Keratosis Pilaris by gently buffing the skin and smooth over visible, raised skin bumps.

Cellulite

Cellulite is a condition that affects the appearance of the skin in areas with underlying fat deposits (most noticeably on the buttocks and thighs), giving the skin a dimpled, lumpy appearance. The Hayo’u Nephrite Body Comb is particularly effective at targeting cellulite, especially if used in combination with Aromatherapy Associates Revive Body Gel, which contains high concentrations of the finest essential oils of juniper berry, grapefruit and rosemary, help promote an even skin texture

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a skin condition, thought to be caused by your immune system, that causes flaky patches of skin, which form silvery-white or grey scales. While you may wish to stick to using products which are prescribed by a doctor, there are skincare products which can help. Elemis Skin Nourishing Milk Bath is a soak treatment which deeply nourishes and repairs dry, dehydrated skin conditions and has been shown to be useful in calming psoriasis. South Seas – Pineapple Express CBD Body Butter is also suitable for treating your skin and is ideal for dry skin, eczema, psoriasis and self-tanning preparations.

Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation isn’t something which just affects the face – many people also suffer from over pigmented areas of skin on their hands, chest and even their groin and armpits. Dermalogica C-12 Pure Bright Serum Is a silky-rich, highly potent treatment that absorbs quickly to optimise efficacy and helps combat hyperpigmentation and balance uneven skin tone. It contains an exclusive blend of oligopeptides, rice derived phytic acid, zinc glycinate and algae to address pigmentation imbalance.

Acne

Another skin condition which is by NO means confined to your face, acne can occur at any age and can affect your chest, back and even your buttocks. To combat body acne, we’d recommend using Murad Outsmart Blemish Clarifying Treatment, a medicated serum clinically proven to reduce acne in just 1 week. Team this with This Works Stress Check CBD Body Polish, which is specifically designed to clear body acne, and your breakouts will improve drastically.

Beauty Scrubs – They Aren’t All Bad!

Beauty Scrubs - They Aren't All Bad!Photo by Gustavo Fring

For some time now, there has been a resoundingly negative attitude towards beauty products which describe themselves as “scrubs “. This is largely thanks to certain brands (which will remain nameless) who used harsh physical exfoliants such as crushed up apricot stones to exfoliate the skin. While there is no question that rubbing something sharp over your skin isn’t a great idea, as it will cause micro tears in your epidermis and potential permanent damage or infection, not all scrubs are created equal and there are some fantastic products on the market which go along way to repairing the reputation of the humble scrub. Here are five of our favourite scrubs for both your face and your body:

Dermalogica Thermafoliant Body Scrub

Dermalogica Thermafoliant Body Scrub is a dual-action exfoliating scrub that dissolves dulling dead skin cells, hydrates, and delivers vital antioxidants leaving skin purified and refreshed. It’s suitable for all skin types and will make your skin more receptive to moisturisation if you want to follow it up with a hydrating body cream. The exfoliation comes courtesy of Indian bamboo stem, which physically exfoliates to refine skin texture and brighten tone.

Aromatherapy Associates Mattifying Purifying Facial Scrub

This facial scrub from Aromatherapy Associates is designed for oily skin and will draw out and eliminate dead skin-clogging cells. It contains corn granules, which work to gently buff away unwanted cells while natural clay draws impurities from deeper within pores. Finally, it contains rebalancing essential oils of geranium and petitgrain to tighten and reduce shine. Perfect for teenage and spot-prone skin.

Decleor Green Mandarin Exfoliating 2 in 1 Scrub Mask

This product from Decleor is truly multifunctional – it contains natural sugars which gently exfoliate the skin and  carrot extract for an instant sheer tint. As the name suggests, it also contains oil which is found naturally in the peel of the green mandarin and has strong antioxidant compounds called terpenes which pair with free radicals to protect the skin and prevent skin ageing. It can be used as a scrub to simply exfoliate the skin and remove dead cells or left on for up to five minutes as a mask to allow the ingredients to give you maximum benefits.

Medik8 Pore Refining Scrub

This pore refining scrub from Medik8 packs a double punch as it contains both chemical and physical exfoliants to really rid your skin of dulling dead cells. Salicylic and mandelic acid dissolve deep-seated impurities and oil to decongest and tighten pores, while natural jojoba grains gently slough away dead skin cells to help perfect the texture of the complexion. Pores are left virtually undetectable and skin feels soft, smooth and supple.

UpCircle Coffee Face Scrub-Citrus Blend

If you like your beauty products to be as kind to the planet as they are to your skin, then this scrub from UpCircle should really appeal to you. It contains recycled coffee grounds which have been sourced from artisan coffee shops to help buff away dry skin. It’s formulated for dry, dehydrated skin types and contains rosehip, sweet orange and lemon essential oil to reveal a glowing complexion, whilst shea butter will keep your skin moisturised and nourished afterwards.

Take the Sting Out of Shaving

Take the Sting Out of ShavingPhoto by cottonbro

Whether you’re male, female or non-binary, removing hair from your legs, face or some other area, there’s no denying the fact that shaving is still the most popular methind of de-fuzzing yourself. Shaving is cheap and easy, and it gives pretty good results, but there are a few downsides. Ingrown hairs can be a problem, especially in the pubic region, and some people feel that their hair grows back far too quickly after shaving. There are, however, products which can assist you with all of these problems, making shaving more convenient than ever. Here are some of our favourites:

Lycon Ingrown-X-It Foaming Wash

This foaming wash is highly effective in minimising the appearance of ingrown hairs, while calming and decongesting breakouts for the entire body and face. It protects the skin’s pH balance, leaving skin feeling clean, soft, smooth and moisturised. With lemon tea tree, arnica and calendula, it can be used before and between shaves to protect the skin.

REN Clean Skincare Rosa Centifolia Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser

Using a gentle exfoliating cleanser before shaving, like this one from REN Clean Skincare, can purify and detoxify your skin while prepping your skin for a closer shave. The multi-functional product contains jojoba wax beads that work to gently scrub away dead cells revealing fresh skin underneath, while the jojoba seed oil deeply hydrates, plumps and firms the skin.

Lycon Ingrown X-It Solution

This breakthrough spray product from Lycon can be used on both face and body to mildly exfoliate, decongest and help minimise the appearance and discomfort of ingrown hairs. It reduces redness and helps to take down and swelling and is great for after waxing, shaving, depilatory creams, electrolysis and for regular breakouts and congested skins. It’s easy and convenient to use and has a cooling combination of allantoin and arnica.

Decleor Post Hair Removal Cooling Gel

This gel from Decleor is designed to use after shaving, or any other type of hair removal. It’s formulated with clove and chamomile essential oils to provide an instant soothing effect and  is suitable for face and body, including delicate and intimate areas. It’s clinically proven to help reduce the appearance of ingrown hairs and reduce hair regrowth, allowing you longer times between hair removal sessions.

Lycon Hair On Strike

Many products claim to reduce hair regrowth with little evidence to back that up, but this scientifically advanced formula is proven to visibly diminish the appearance of unwanted hair growth after waxing, shaving, laser, electrolysis and depilatory creams. With regular use the look of hair becomes finer, softer and lighter in colour, as hairless patches develop. It should be used immediately after hair removal, then every morning and evening thereafter, for maximum results.

Our Top Five Sheet Masks

Our Top Five Sheet MasksPhoto by Anna Shvets from Pexels

Sheet masks are an easy and effective way to provide your skin with an immediate and big boost of vitamins and moisture. They’re also a fun way to relax and pamper yourself at home. One reason sheet masks are so amazing is that they create a seal on your skin. This prevents the moisture and vitamins from escaping. Your skin cells get to absorb virtually all of the nourishing ingredients, which also means that you really get your money’s worth! Here are five of our favourite sheet masks for different skin concerns:

Skin Abode Glow Young Face Masks

This powerful gel sheet mask contains a combination of gold, collagen and seaweed that will hydrate, brighten and tighten your skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It contains the perfect formula of natural ingredients to slow down any signs of ageing, including glycerin, as it replenishes the skin’s natural moisturising factor, which becomes depleted with age, enabling your skin to hold on to more moisture, and therefore reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

Skin Republic Retinol Infusion Sheet Mask

This sheet mask from Skin Republic contains a potent dose of retinol which targets signs of ageing by smoothing wrinkles and fading the appearance of dark spots and pigmentation. It visibly improves skin tone, texture and firmness and skin appears more radiant, renewed and nourished. It should be left on for 15-20 minutes for maximum results and used once a week for four weeks, then as needed.

CACI – Hydro Mask

This mask from CACI is designed for use on sensitised skin and has a soothing and calming action on the skin that immediately reduces the appearance of skin redness and irritation. It is enriched with intensive moisturising properties that replenish sun damaged and dehydrated skin as well as powerful antioxidant ingredients and helps to smooth and soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Skin Republic Vitamin C Brightening Sheet Mask

As well as offering deep hydration, this sheet mask from Skin Republic contains a high percentage of vitamin C to brighten your complexion. It contains natural antioxidants which hydrate and revitalise the skin to reveal a radiant and luminous complexion while seven plant extracts help reduce the appearance of age spots and imperfections for a bright and even skin tone.

Medik8 Ultimate Recovery Bio-Cellulose Mask

This mask from Medik8 is enriched with detoxifying minerals and deeply hydrating hyaluronic acid to help cool, restore and comfort even the most sensitive of skin types. It contains no alcohol or artificial fragrances, which often irritate dry and sensitive skin and uses bio-cellulose to create an impenetrable veil to lock in moisture tight; deeply infusing the lightweight serum into the skin.

Top Tips for Teen Skin

Top Tips for Teen SkinPhoto by Ernest Brillo on Unsplash

Whether you are a parent or carer of a teenager, or a teenager yourself, navigating the complicated world of teen-specific skincare can sometimes feel overwhelming. There are so many different sources of advice out there, some of which are incredibly helpful, while others are simply focused on selling a product whether it works or not. Here at Pure Beauty, we genuinely care about the complexions of our clients which is why we stock such a wide range of different brands, each of which is suitable for a different skin type or purpose. Today we are looking at teen skin and giving you five of our top tips for looking after it:

Keep It Clean

One of the most important things that you can do to look after teen skin is to keep it very clean. This means making sure that you use a teen-skin specific face wash like Dermalogica Clear Start Foaming wash twice a day, as well as ensuring that you never sleep in your make-up, no matter how tired you’re feeling at bedtime! Ridding your skin of cosmetics and other daily dirt will prevent your pores from becoming blocked and help to wash away bacteria and sebum which can cause spots.

Control Oil

Teen skin can often be guilty of overproducing oil, which means that simply cleansing twice a day may not be enough to keep your oil production under control. However, what many people don’t know is that oily skin can actually be caused by underlying dryness, which means you need an oil free moisturiser like Murad Clarifying Oil Free Water Gel to balance your complexion. It also contains innovative technology that interrupts communication so bacteria can’t form a group and cause outbreaks, making it ideal for teenage skin.

Take Action On Spots

Sometimes, the unfortunate truth is that no matter how much you cleanse and moisturise your skin, breakouts will still happen. Fortunately, using a product like Decleor Rosemary Targeted Solution can help to reduce the appearance of blemishes and soothe red blotches. It is enriched with rosemary essential oils which will not only treat breakouts but also help to prevent them and can be used throughout the day to help reduce the appearance of imperfections.

Avoid Sunbeds and Wear Sunscreen

One of the more outdated pieces of advice which used to be handed to sufferers of acne is that using a sunbed would be good for your skin. These days, we are a lot more savvy when it comes to sunbeds and the damage that they can do. It’s widely agreed that the risk definitely outweighs the benefit, which means we would never suggest sunbed use for any type of skin issue. It’s also worth bearing in mind that wearing a teen-specific sunscreen on a daily basis is important for a couple of different reasons. Using a product like Dermalogica Oil Free Matte SPF30 will not only provide your skin with broad spectrum protection from the sun, it also contains ingredients which help prevent shine, regulate oil production and soothe inflammation. Exposing irritated skin to high levels of UVA and UVB rays can increase inflammation and also lead to hyperpigmentation of scarring, which is why it is so important to protect acne and spots prone skin from the sun.

DON’T PICK!

We are well aware of how difficult it is to avoid squeezing spots, especially when they have unsightly white heads; after all Dr Pimple Popper didn’t get so popular out of nowhere! Having said that, one of the best things that you can do for spot-prone teenage skin is avoid squeezing and picking at your blemishes. Aside from the potential for scarring your face, it’s also possible to introduce more bacteria to your pores by picking at spots, which will worsen them in the long run. If you or your teen are in a position where you’ve already done the picking, we would recommend Dermalogica Post-Breakout Fix as it helps to fade the hyperpigmentation that popping leaves behind. It can be used on marks and inflammation which are new and old and will help to even out your skin tone while restoring and nourishing compromised skin.

Five of the Most Googled Skincare Questions

Five of the Most Googled Skincare QuestionsPhoto by Christina @ wocintechchat.com on Unsplash

Regardless of advances in skincare technology or trends which might dictate which products people use, there are certain questions which seem to get asked time and time again. Our clients often ask us questions regarding which are the best products for their skin and there are countless groups on social media where people can go for skincare advice, so with this in mind we thought we’d look at some of the most Googled skincare questions and give you our expert opinion:

What products should everyone have in their skin care routine?

This is an age-old question and one that we’ve attempted to answer in previous posts. For most people, the products themselves will depend on their skin type (someone with acne–prone skin won’t have the same concerns as someone with ageing skin, for instance). However, the main products that we would advocate for in a bare-minimum routine would be a cleanser, a moisturiser and something which contains an SPF, all of which should be targeted for your specific skin type.

How often should you exfoliate?

There aren’t any specific rules on how often you should exfoliate, and again, it will depend greatly on your skin type AND the type of exfoliator you’re using. Once or twice a week is usually more than enough for any type of skin, however something like Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant is specifically formulated for daily use on all skin types and won’t cause any redness of irritation with regular usage.

Do you need different products for morning and evening?

While a lot of “experts” will tell you that day creams are just as useful at night, there is a difference between day and night products. Day time formulas will usually be more easily absorbed and designed to be compatible with other cosmetics, while night formulas will be thicker and richer as they generally have a minimum of eight hours to soak into your skin. If you’re looking for a potent night cream which has visible effects on your skin, we highly recommend Elemis BIOTEC Skin Energising Night Cream.

What’s the best age to start using anti-aging products?

Many people will wait until the signs of ageing start to show before reaching for targeted products, but as far as we’re concerned, it’s never too early to use anti-ageing products. The clue is in the name – ANTI-ageing! As we’ve said before, prevention is better than cure so investing in a good anti-ageing regime, such as Aromatherapy Associates Anti-Ageing will allow you to get ahead of the signs of ageing before they begin.

Can you use retinol if you have sensitive skin?

This is a tricky one to answer. Generally speaking, people with sensitive skin can use retinol (highly concentrated vitamin A, to those who don’t know), but they’re better off sticking to a lower concentration or starting low and working their way up. There is, however, a natural alternative to retinol, called bakuchiol. Medik8 have created their CSA Bakuchiol Edition Kit for people looking for a gentle, natural alternative to retinol which still offers powerful results.

Fabulously Fermented – The Latest Skincare Trend

Fabulously Fermented - The Latest Skincare TrendPhoto by Markus Spiske on Unsplash

For many of us, we hear the word “fermented” and the first thing that springs to mind is beer! However, it’s been common knowledge for some time now that fermented foods are incredibly good for you and it’s recommended that you add more fermented foods to your diet for a healthy gut. Skincare brands are also starting to recognise the power of fermented ingredients, so we thought we’d put together a list of some of the best lotions and potions which harness the power of fermentation:

Elemis Superfood AHA Glow Booster

Everything in the Elemis Superfood range contains ingredients derived from superfoods, and in this case it packs a double punch by using fermented extracts of pumpkin and acerola cherry, both of which are rich in brightening AHAs to help smooth away dull skin. As if that weren’t enough, it also contains fermented rice water and green tea seed oil, which are combined with a balancing prebiotic for a nourishing and hydrating boost.

Aromatherapy Associates Eye Zone Concentrate

This concentrated eye treatment from Aromatherapy Associates contains a powerful blend of ingredients to immediately tighten the skin around the eye. A combination of bio-fermented actives, advanced amino acids and an effective pure essential oil blend restore the elasticity of the skin, while edelweiss stem cells help minimise the appearance of fine lines. The product contains a perfect balance between science and nature to give a potent effect.

Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Body Oil

This body oil from Dermalogica is inspired by Korean beauty and contains fermented red ginseng, which calms and nourishes to deliver glowing skin. Bergamot, neroli, orange, patchouli and sandalwood combine to create a delicate yet heady fragrance which leaves skin soft and clean and can be used wet or dry, depending on your preference.

Elemis Superfood AHA Glow Cleansing Butter

Another product from the Elemis Superfood range, this cleansing butter contains fermented pumpkin and acerola cherry to cleanse the skin while helping it to glow. The ingredients are packed with AHAs and natural enzymes capable of enhancing the skin’s natural cellular renewal process to gently smooth away dull skin for a fresh glowing complexion.

Dermalogica Stress Positive Eye Lift

This hydrating, cooling eye gel contains a plethora of natural ingredients which work together to improve the skin from the inside out. As well as containing fermented yeast, which is effective at protecting skin lipids, there’s a healthy dose of sea water, indigo seed extract, arctic algae and hyaluronic acid, which all combine to prevent water loss from the skin, enhance the skin’s elasticity and also protect the natural microbiome.
