How to Build a Skincare Routine

Almost every beauty related article that you read will make some sort of reference to the fact that everybody needs a “skincare routine”. This usually relates to what products you use on your face, as well as how and when you use them. For people who have unproblematic skin, this is a simple case of choosing which product you want to use and using them. Voila! Simple, no?

Maybe not, if your skin has any sort of special need. Having oily, dry, acne prone or some other type of skin means you might find it slightly more difficult to find a combination of products which works for your specific complexion. With this in mind we thought we would take a look at the simplest way to build a skincare routine which works for you.

Identify Your Skin Type

The first step to creating a personalised skincare routine is identifying your own skin type. Is your skin dry? Do you suffer with oily skin? Are you a teen with acne or blemish prone skin? Every different skin type will benefit from different ingredients in their skincare so it’s important to know what your skin needs. There are four basic types of healthy skin: normal, dry, oily and combination skin.

Start With the Basics

Everybody knows the age old mantra “cleanse, tone, moisturise“, and while it may seem like a cliche this is genuinely the best place to start. Once you’ve identified your skin type, take a look at the collections offered for your specific skin concern and you will usually find at the very least a cleanser, toner and moisturiser which are specifically designed for your skin. You don’t have to always use every product from the same range, however you may find that products from one collection often work best together.

Add Any Extras

Once you’ve got the cleanse, tone and moisturise part of your skincare routine down, this is where you can start to think about any extras that your skin might need. For instance, if you are moisturising but still feel as though you have areas of dryness, you might benefit from a treatment mask to give your skin extra hydration. If you have ageing skin, you may want to opt for something a bit richer to ensure your skin is getting a collagen boost.

Skin which is prone to hyperpigmentation may need something to tackle dark spots and to even out your skin tone. Every face is completely unique and only you can decide where you need to get extra help from your skin care.

Persevere

This is perhaps the most important point in this entire article; we’ve lost count of the amount of times that our clients come back to us and say, after just a few days, they don’t think their skincare is making a difference.

While we do stock certain products which offer guarantees regarding how quickly they will work, generally speaking changes to your skin will take at least a month but you should follow a new skincare routine for at least three months to properly gauge effectiveness.

Before this point you have simply not given your products a chance to work their magic and unless you stick to the new routine you will never know how good your skin could look!
