Five Products to Bolster Your Complexion Ahead of the Festive Season

Five Products to Bolster Your Complexion Ahead of the Festive SeasonPhoto by Ilyuza Mingazova on Unsplash

Whether you’ve got a quiet meal planned at home or a huge family gathering with all of the extended members of your clan, there’s no denying the fact that Christmas is often a gruelling time. There’s the planning, the prep and the parties, which can all take their toll on your body, often causing havoc with your complexion. We thought that now would be a good time to introduce you to five products which you can start using now, ahead of the festive season, which will help to bolster your complexion and ensure that the festive effect isn’t too detrimental:

Aromatherapy Associates Anti-Ageing Intensive Skin Treatment Oil

If you have dry, dehydrated or ageing skin then the combination of central heating, cold winter air and plenty of Christmas booze has the potential to make things much worse. Aromatherapy Associates Anti-Ageing Intensive Skin Treatment Oil is enriched with vitamins and natural oils to support stressed skin, and nourish and encourage natural skin renewal. You can apply it twice a week or use it as an intensive treatment over a shorter period of time, but it will do wonders for your skin during the excesses of the festive season.

Elemis Pro-Collagen Morning Matrix

This formula from Elemis is your skin’s best friend when it comes to external stressors. As well as containing Japanese Artemisia Capillaris which helps protect against the effects of blue light on the skin, turmeric helps support skin by protecting collagen and elastin from stress-induced degradation and a microalgae blend helps to protect skin from stress signals and visible ageing for a smoother, more radiant complexion.

Decleor Plum Eye Cream

The eyes are one of the first places to show the signs of stress and fatigue, and there’s rarely a more stressful and tiring time than Christmas! Decleor Plum Eye Cream is a fragrance-free cream that has a double-action formula to lift and firm the eye contours, and boost radiance. It also contains pearlescent particles and soft powders to conceal dark circles and fine lines, which will help you to “fake it til you make it” if the effects of Christmas get too heavy!

Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Balance

This moisturising cream from Dermalogica does so much more than just hydrating your skin. It protects your complexion by combining key barrier lipids that enhance skin’s natural resilience and supports barrier recovery, as well as hyaluronic acid to bolster hydration levels. The formula smooths the appearance of dry lines and helps repair damaged skin, while botanical extracts and vitamins repair prematurely ageing skin, giving you a cream which targets current issues with your skin AND helps to prevent any future issues that may arise.

Aromatherapy Associates Support Equilibrium Bath and Shower Oil

Taking care of yourself over Christmas can be tricky when there’s so much to do, but making sure you’re relaxed and well looked-after can make a huge difference to your complexion. Aromatherapy Associates Support Breathe Bath and Shower Oil contains an uplifting blend of geranium, rose and frankincense essential oils to help lift your spirits as well as helping to give you emotional balance and helping to harmonise your hormones. Just the ticket when you’ve got a lot on your plate and want to see in the New Year looking and feeling great.

The benefits of massage during the winter months

During the winter months as cold and flu season hits, aches and pains seem to become more prevalent , dry skin appears to worsen with extremes of temperature and depression and anxiety can hit harder with the dark, cold days ahead.
Self care during this time is vital – a diet rich in seasonal nutrient dense foods- think warming soups and stews, staying active, wrapping up warm and taking time out for regular massage can all help.
Massage is beneficial to the body no matter what season it is, but can be especially so during the winter months as the temperature drops and the days become shorter.

Massage boosts the circulation, bringing fresh oxygenated blood all over the body, warming up the muscles and making the blood flow better to ease those aches and pains. Not only does massage stretch the muscles but it helps to keep your joints working correctly too.
With regular massage the immune system is given a helping hand (literally!) by stimulating your white blood cells which in turn helps fight infections around the body making it easier to fight off colds and flu during the colder months.
This time of year with the cold air outside and then the heating on indoors, it can play havoc with the skin making it feel dry and tight. During massage the oils and lotions applied can help combat this, also improving skin elasticity by stimulating the production of collagen.
And finally, with the shorter daylight hours, it can be easy to feel unmotivated or down during this time. Massage can help by releasing happy hormones – endorphins and serotonin, relaxing you to help release stress, improve mood and ease anxiety. Improving your sleep is another benefit of massage – the better we sleep the more energised we feel during the winter months.

Minerals – The Next Big Thing in Skincare?

Minerals - The Next Big Thing in Skincare?Photo by Kindel Media

Unless you’ve been living in a cave and being raised by wolves, you’ve probably heard “vitamins and minerals” referred to in many different contexts, from dietary needs to what’s in your skincare. Most of us know what vitamins are and where we can find them, but are you also clear on what “minerals” are and where they can be found?

According to the National Library of Medicine “Minerals are important for your body to stay healthy. Your body uses minerals for many different jobs, including keeping your bones, muscles, heart, and brain working properly. Minerals are also important for making enzymes and hormones.”

Many of the minerals which are found in skin care are there to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays as well as daily pollutants which can interfere with the skin’s biome and are found in naturally occurring substances, such as kelp. Here are five of our favourite mineral-rich products:

Color Wow Money Masque

As we mentioned above, kelp is one of nature’s richest sources of minerals, and this hair mask contains a blend of Mediterranean sea kelp, algae and blue sea kale, which are full to the brim with nourishing minerals that deliver long-lasting hydration for dry, porous and chemically-damaged hair. It  can be used for 3-5 minutes for a quick top-up of your hydration, or for 20-30 minutes for a deeper, more nourishing treatment.

Dermalogica Daily Milkfoliant

This exfoliating powder is mixed with water to make a milky solution which polishes the skin while supporting the moisture barrier for healthier-looking skin. As well as various exfoliating and moisturising ingredients, such as fruit-based grape extract and arginine, this powder contains atomised sea salt, which is rich in naturally occurring minerals such as magnesium, which soothes the skin.

REN Clean Skincare Atlantic Kelp And Magnesium Anti-Fatigue Body Cream

Once again, we’re extolling the virtues of kelp, this time from the Atlantic, in this anti-fatigue body cream from REN Clean Skincare. Atlantic Kelp Extract helps to nourish, smooth and tone by replenishing skin with moisture and essential minerals while energising magnesium PCA and plankton extract help to restore the skin’s moisture balance and enhance its natural cell renewal cycle,

Medik8 Ultimate Recovery Bio-Cellulose Mask

If you’ve been here before, you’ll know that we at Pure Beauty love a sheet mask, and this one from Medik8 is packed with detoxifying minerals and hyaluronic acid to help cool, restore and comfort even the most sensitive of skin types. It’s the perfect treatment for stressed-out skin, whether you’ve just had a professional treatment such as microneedling or dermabrasion, or you’ve simply had a heavy week and need some TLC for your complexion.

Dermalogica SkinPerfect Primer SPF30

Primer is an essential part of many people’s daily make-up routine and this multi-functional primer packs a real punch! Pearl powder and natural earth minerals provide a neutral tint to perfect skin tone and enhance luminosity and radiance, while a potent peptide helps to improve skin firmness, as sunscreens shield against sun damage. It can be worn alone or under make up for a perfect finish and all-day protection.

Get Some Clarity with these Clarifying Products

Get Clarity with these Clarifying ProductsPhoto by Shiny Diamond

“Clarifying” is another word which gets bandied about in the beauty community and although many of us use products which claim to be clarifying, not everyone knows what they really do! Clarifying is the process of removing unwanted buildup and residues on your skin and hair, resetting them to their natural state. It’s become increasingly popular, especially in the “curly girl” movement which advocates for removing certain ingredients from your regime as they leave too much build-up which may weigh down your natural curls. Here are some great products you can use if you want to get in on the clarifying craze!

Elemis Clarifying Serum

It’s not always been hugely common to see serums which clarify the skin, but that’s exactly what this one from Elemis does. Ideal for oily skin, this balancing formula helps clear the look of blemishes without drying skin as well as helping to control excess oil, whilst visibly reducing the look of blackheads and post-blemish discolouration. Prolonged usage will leave skin looking calmer, clearer and smoother than ever.

Medik8 Clarifying Foam

This clarifying foam from Medik8 is a deeply purifying, antibacterial foaming cleanser that unclogs pores and lightly exfoliates the skin without causing dryness or irritation. It’s potency comes from the blend of mandelic acid and salicylic acid, which are combined with natural tea tree oil to renew and detoxify the complexion, while soothing niacinamide calms the appearance of problematic skin.

Murad AHA/BHA/Retinoid Daily Clarifying Peel

This clever little product has an oil-on-water formula which, when shaken, blends a resurfacing retinoid and glycolic acid with salicylic acid to gently yet effectively help clarify pores and improve surface cell turnover for smoother skin. It’s a powerhouse of a product which can be used nightly to exfoliate and resurface the skin while helping to reduce shine and restore balance.

Olaplex No.4C Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo

As we mentioned above, clarifying isn’t just for the skin – hair which has product build-up can look dull and lifeless too. This shampoo from haircare giants Olaplex is an advanced clarifying shampoo powered by an exclusive broad-spectrum clarifying system, that delivers a powerful deep cleanse – removing buildup and impurities and clears the way for healthier hair. It also strengthens the hair’s bonds, making it stronger, shinier and more healthy looking.

UpCircle Clarifying Face Mask with Olive Powder

If you like your beauty products to have a conscience but still want clear, balanced skin then this mask is for you. Made with the fine powder of discarded olive stones, this detoxifying mask is suitable for all skin types and also harnesses the powers of white kaolin clay, coconut powder and baobab oil to reveal a smooth, revitalised complexion. The formula is also vegan, cruelty-free and totally free from palm oil.

Ingredient Focus – Squalene

Ingredient Focus - SqualenePhoto by Kris Sevinc on Unsplash

As you know, here at Pure Beauty, we like to get to know all of the products we sell, right down to the last ingredient. If we’re recommending something to our clients, we want to know everything that’s in it and what it can do. One ingredient that we haven’t talked to you about before is squalene. It’s found in human sebum (that’s the oil in our skin, in case you didn’t know!) and is something our skin needs to function properly, which is why we thought we’d take this opportunity to teach you about squalene and the products we sell which contain it:

What exactly is squalene?

As we said above, it’s already in the oil in human skin, so why do we need it in our cosmetics, too? As with other things, such as collagen, the amount of squalene your body produces declines with age. Peak production of this natural moisturiser occurs in the teen years, with production slowing down in your 20s or 30s. As a result, your skin becomes drier and rougher as you age.

Where does squalene come from?

In times gone by, squalene was extracted from shark livers, but these days people prefer their skincare to be cruelty-free and vegan-friendly (and rightly so!). Fortunately, squalene is naturally present in olives, rice bran, and sugarcane, allowing the sharks to stay in the sea where they belong!

What are the benefits of using squalene?

Healthy skin is hydrated skin. Therefore, squalane offers many advantages when used topically. Increasing your moisture can make your skin look younger and more bright. Products containing squalene also combat free radicals, which hasten the ageing process, causing skin damage. Additionally, regular use might increase collagen production, leading to firmer skin.

Products containing squalene:

Decleor Micellar Oil

This cleanser is a world-first in micellar technology and uses the powerful combination of oil and water to work deep into the pores, dissolving and dispersing dirt and impurities and removing all traces of make-up, including waterproof and long-lasting formulations. Sweet almond oil, rich in essential fatty acids, helps to strengthen and soothe the skin, and vegetal squalene (derived from olive oil) maintains optimal hydration levels for deep moisturisation and suppleness.

Maskology Squalane Professional Sheet Mask

This mask intensely hydrates, enriches and replenishes the skin, resulting in a youthful and energised complexion. Harnessing the power of olive, passionfruit, organic sweet orange oil and organic almond oil, this fruit mix creates an anti-ageing formula that rejuvenates and soothes the skin. The squalane is sourced from olives, to provide a powerful boost of collagen production.

Skin Republic Retinoid Complex 1% Serum

Skin Republic Retinoid Complex 1% Serum is a velvety serum infused with 1% retinoid complex in squalane that helps reduce the visible signs of ageing. It contains a very high concentration of active ingredients and can be used on its own as a daily treatment or to boost the results of a Skin Republic Face Mask.

Why Encapsulated Ingredients Give Next Level Skincare

Matthew Tkocz on Unsplash

Here at Pure Beauty, we’re well aware of the fact that new buzzwords come along all the time which often makes something which is pretty run of the mill sound new and exciting. However, when it comes to encapsulation, this isn’t the case – we’re genuinely enthusiastic about this process! Here, we’re giving you the lowdown on encapsulated ingredients and which products have them:

What is ‘encapsulation’?

The process of encapsulation involves molecular change. Imagine a shiny coating covering the ingredient molecules; this is how the polysaccharide shell protects them. The active compounds in your skincare—i.e., the ingredients that can change your skin—are carried by this encapsulated coating, which acts as a carrier system. When you apply a skincare product with encapsulated chemicals to your skin, the coating starts to disappear and the active ingredients gradually begin to come out.

Why should I look for products with encapsulated ingredients?

There are many advantages to covering active substances with a protective encapsulation. In the first place, it makes components even milder BUT more effective. Encapsulated coatings shield your actives and release them gradually over time as opposed to instantly activating them on the surface of your skin. This enables it to penetrate your skin’s deeper layers, where the active components will work to your greatest advantage. Ingredients are gradually released as the shell covering wears away, so your skin will benefit from them for a longer period of time. Encapsulation also stabilises molecules by protecting them from environmental factors, like UV light, that causes them to break down or lose their effectiveness.

Which products have encapsulated ingredients?

REN Clean Skincare Overnight Glow Dark Spot Sleeping Cream targets only uneven pigmentation on all skin types and tones – without affecting or lightening your natural skin tone. It contains an encapsulated algae complex which targets the appearance of excessive pigmentation.

Medik8 Advanced Day Ultimate Protect is a daily moisturiser with a high level of sun protection to prevent sun-induced premature signs of skin ageing. It utilises encapsulated photolyase to optimise penetration into the skin, delivering next-generation anti-ageing results that include healthier-looking and more resilient skin with a natural glow.

This Works Sleep Plus Pillow Spray is a fast acting natural remedy to help restore healthy sleep patterns for restless sleepers. A natural, aromatherapeutic blend of lavender, camomile and vetivert is encapsulated within this sleep spray which, thanks to motion activated technology, is released continuously throughout the night to support a longer, less interrupted sleep.

Dermalogica Oil Free Matte is a lightweight, ultra-sheer broad spectrum sunscreen that helps prevent shine, regulate oil production and soothe inflammation. It is suitable for skin with excess oil production and contains an encapsulated complex of antioxidant vitamins C and E which scavenge UV-induced free radicals while enhancing photoprotection.

Elemis Pro-Collagen Overnight Matrix is the next generation Pro-Collagen with Smart Drone Technology. Pro Collagen Overnight Matrix targets areas of the face where stress shows most. With encapsulated Peptide4 and Hetra-Peptide, this dual action formulation works both to protect the delivery of the actives and to help with the penetration into the skin’s surface.

The Five Cardinal Rules of Menopausal Skincare

The Five Cardinal Rules of Menopausal Skincare

When we reach menopause, at whatever age that may be for you, we all start to notice numerous changes to our bodies. One of the places where significant changes start to happen is our skin, which has to deal with the loss of certain hormones and our bodies producing less of certain skin-essential building blocks. With this in mind, we’ve put together a list of do’s and don’ts which should help you to care for your menopausal skin in the best way possible:

Use Retinoids

Retinol is the best component to boost collagen and successfully slow down some of the ageing process, so incorporating it into your skincare routine is a no-brainer. Beginners utilising retinol should start with a modest dose and progressively increase to higher formulations, which can be used to increase skin thickness or reduce wrinkles. Try to find products that have moisturising and calming elements like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and niacinamide. These are especially useful for reducing any dryness and irritation linked to menopausal skin and first-time retinol use.

NEVER Forget SPF!

Using an SPF, such as Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream SPF30, every day is essential for keeping your skin moisturised and protected. This is important during menopause because hormonal changes have already made your skin more delicate. It is less prepared to fight off outside invaders and contaminants, and you also need to use sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. Long-term sun exposure can aggravate dark spots and other discolorations already present while also causing hyperpigmentation. SPF helps prevent ageing because UV rays from the sun can lead to wrinkles and fine lines.

Try Some Peptides

Because they will increase collagen formation and skin suppleness, peptides are also fantastic for menopausal skin. Peptides are pieces of proteins, and proteins make up the skin’s structural constituents. By acting as messengers between cells, they can encourage the skin’s cells to produce more collagen and elastin, enhancing the skin’s youthful appearance. Medik8 Copper PCA Peptides is a revolutionary serum expertly formulated to recharge and energise skin for next-generation anti-ageing results.

Use Products With Calming Ingredients

When we reach the menopause, we not only have to deal with the changes to our skin, such as dryness and added sensitivity, but many of us also suffer from hot flushes and redness. When you’re experiencing a hot flush or are worried about redness, calming skincare products and face mists can feel like life savers. Keep a cool, moisturising face mist, such as Dermalogica UltraCalming Mist near your bed to use as a calming spray to chill flushed skin if you wake up in the middle of the night.

Tackle Menopausal Acne

Remember how puberty played havoc with your hormones and caused acne? We’re sorry to tell you that something similar can happen during the menopause, and menopausal acne is very much a thing that many women have to deal with. The trouble is, the vast majority of products made for acne are intended for younger skin and don’t also tackle the signs of ageing. Dermalogica Age Bright Clearing Serum is an active two in one serum that clears and helps prevent breakouts while reducing visible skin ageing.

Take Control of Your T-Zone

Considering the fact that the t-zone (the area around your nose, forehead and chin) only accounts for a relatively small area of your body, it’s one of the places that is most often mentioned when people are asked about their skincare concerns. Compared with the rest of your face, your t-zone has more oil glands, which is why it tends to be oilier and more acne-prone. Acne often develops when excess oil and dead skin cells mix together, which blocks your pores, creating whiteheads and blackheads. Fortunately, there are plenty of products to help you to control your t-zone, and these are five of the best:

REN Clean Skincare Clarimatte T-Zone Control Cleansing Gel

Cleansing is probably the most important step when trying to control your t-zone as this is when you’ll get rid of excess oil. REN Clean Skincare Clarimatte T-Zone Control Cleansing Gel is a purifying facial cleansing gel that is for skin that is prone to oiliness and breakouts, particularly in the t-zone. It contains mayblossom extract and willow bark which help to minimise pores and keep skin clear, while blue cypress essential oil helps soothe the mind.

Elemis Superfood Berry Boost Mask

Masks are a great way to treat your t-zone as they can rebalance the skin. Elemis Superfood Berry Boost Mask is a purifying mask featuring Brazilian purple clay and an omega-rich super berry complex to balance the skin and mattify the t-zone. It also contains a prebiotic, naturally derived from sugar, helps to maintain balance in the skin’s microflora for a healthier looking complexion.

Dermalogica Sebum Clearing Masque

Another mask (we told you they were useful, didn’t we?!) – this sebum clearing mask from Dermalogica contains clays which are specifically used to absorb excess sebum. Salicylic acid clears pore congestion while calming botanicals such as oat and bisabolol help soothe aggravation brought on by breakouts. Finally, the masque also contains licorice and niacinamide, which helps even skin tone.

Evolve Organic Beauty True Balance Lotion

There are two things that many people fail to realise about oily skin – firstly, that it still needs moisturiser and secondly, some oily skin is actually caused by your body overproducing sebum due to an underlying dryness. This moisturiser from Evolve Organic Beauty was specifically designed to rebalance oily skin, providing much needed moisture, inhibiting oil production and reducing the shiny appearance of the t-zone.

Refinery Face Mask

Yes, it’s ANOTHER mask, but as we said twice already, they are useful! This mask from Refinery provides an instant detoxifying and restorative boost for tired skin. With a base of clay, it also contains sweet almond and jojoba oils to deep cleanse, moisturise and revitalise your t-zone. Additionally, essential oil of juniper detoxifies while black pepper, ginger and peppermint help boost circulation for clear and revitalised skin.
