Get Minty with Decleor and Dermalogica

mintMany of the products from Dermalogica and Decleor contain ingredients from nature and one of those ingredients is mint. As well as being packed with vitamins A, C, and B6, mint is known as a powerful toner, skin invigorator and lip plumper, amongst other things. We’ve put together a list of our favourite mint-containing products to show exactly what it does.

Dermalogica Multi-Active Toner

dermalogica-multi-active-toner

As we mentioned above, mint is an effective toner, and this one from Dermalogica used balm mint to cool and soften the skin. It also contains lavender to soothe and purify, arnica and cucumber to calm and freshen and aloe vera to reduce inflammation, making this a real powerhouse from nature’s kitchen.

Decleor Fresh Purifying Gel

decleor-fresh-purifying-gel

Mint is a truly refreshing ingredient and actually makes the skin feel tingly when applied. This gel contains peppermint water to give you a really fresh feeling whilst washing away any dirt and bacteria from the day. It’s completely paraben-free and lathers into a soft foam when applied to a dampened face to remove excess sebum.

Dermalogica Environmental Control Deodorant

We all know that mint smells great which is why this all-natural deodorant from Dermalogica is formulated on a base of mint, along with camomile and aloe, to ensure it smells great without any risk of irritation. It also contains coriander, parsley, clove and hyssop to neutralise odour as well as ylang ylang, lavender, eucalyptus leaf, lemon peel, rosemary leaf and tea tree leaf oils for their bacteria-killing properties.

Dermalogica Oil Control Lotion

dermalogica-oil-control-lotion

This lotion from Dermalogica is an absolute gift from above if you suffer with oily skin and are prone to breakouts. Just a little of this feather-light lotion, which balm mint to cool and calm the skin, will help to reduce sebum production, give the face a mattified appearance and kill the bacteria which is responsible for creating spots.

Dermalogica Ultra Sensitive Tint SPF30

dermalogica-ultra-sensitive-tint-spf30

This is actually one of our favourite products as it just does SO much. As well as providing a high factor of sun protection for the face, it also offers a subtle tint of colour to give you light coverage as well as containing calming properties (thanks to balm mint again) which will stop your skin from looking red and irritated. If you struggle with sensitive skin, finding products which do each of these things can be a nightmare, so finding one product which does it all is almost magical!

September is the month to look after your skin

www.pexels.com

Summer is fading fast, as are our tans.

Whilst feeling the sun on your skin is great, those days spent by the pool and on the beach, will have played havoc with your skin.

September is the perfect time to take a stock and look after your skin and give it a boost before the party season kicks off in November.

We have some easy to follow ideas that will make your skin look and feel great.

A good place to start is to take a step back from alcohol. We aren’t saying go cold turkey and don’t drink at all, you can if you like, but alcohol offers no health benefits and needs to be monitored. As well as dehydrating your skin it can also make the facial blood vessels dilate, which can lead to spidery red thread veins and the exasperation of skin conditions like Psoriasis and Rosacea. Swap the sangria for sparklingly water and if you do drink, keep it to one or two.

The same goes smoking – stop now and you will be thankful on so many levels.

Eating at least five portions of colourful fruit and vegetable a day is the aim if you want to feel healthy and have a complexion that glows. Fruit and veg that comes in rich, vibrant colours are packed full of health boosting antioxidants that protect the skin from the free radicals that cause fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation.

Green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale are packed with folic acid and iron. They also contain the Vitamin C need to absorb the said iron.

The orange in carrots, mango and pumpkins comes from the carotenoids that help produce the collagen that keeps our skin looking smooth and feeling soft – something you need after a summer of fun.

If you want to keep acne at bay, go for blueberries. These little beauties will help the body eliminate toxins and clear blemishes and spots.

For flawless skin, as well as a strong immune system, stock up on Vitamin C. This super vitamin helps form collagen and elastin, which are essential for keeping skin looking plump, smooth and youthful as well as protecting against UV rays and pollution. Blueberries, broccoli, oranges, kiwis, strawberries and sweet potatoes are all great sources and of course help you reach your colourful five a day.

Keep and Eye on Vitamin E as this natural moisturiser not only protects skin from cell damage and but also supports healthy skin growth and can help protect against heart disease, cancer, and age-related eye damage. Foods high in Vitamin E include avocados, dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds, shellfish, fish, plant oils, broccoli and squash.

We know carbs give us energy, but it is vital to eat the right ones. White bread, pasta and cakes have a high GI index so increase insulin levels, which can damage collagen and accelerate wrinkles, something no one wants. Beans, pulses and oats all release sugar into the blood stream slowly leaving you fuller for longer and giving you sustained energy during the day and amazing skin.

Some people think you need to cut out fat if you want to look good, but that just isn’t the case. It is vital to include fat in your diet and it is best to get them from the essential fatty acids. These are found in avocados, oily fish, nuts and seeds and are the ones that will keep your brain working and your skin moisturised.

Your entire body needs water to function, and your skin is no different. Aim to drink at least six to eight glasses of water a day and remember that even mild dehydration can make your skin look dry, tired and grey as well as enhancing fine lines. If you find it hard to drink enough water, keep a bottle with you when you are out and a jug in the fridge with added lemon and cucumber and you will be surprised how easy it is to reach your target.

Give these ideas a try and let us know what you think.

Plump Up with Decleor

If your skin has started to show signs of ageing, you may find that your complexion is a little lacklustre and is starting to feel like a deflating balloon. Fortunately, Decleor offer many different products which actively plump the skin and rejuvenate your face, and we’ve put together a list of the best ones for your consideration:

Decleor Multi-Protection Expert Mask

Decleor Multi-Protection Expert Mask

One of the things we love about this mask is the texture of it – squeeze it out of the tube and massage onto the skin and it will start to achieve a smooth oil consistency. Leave it on the skin for ten minutes to allow the hyaluronic acid and other powerful ingredients to work and then dab the excess off with a cotton pad for a full 24 hours of plumped, rejuvenated skin.

Decleor Ultra-Regenerating Serum

Decleor Ultra-Regenerating Serum

Although it may seem pricey, this bottle will last a long time because it’s so potent that only a tiny amount is needed. Just three drops of this serum, smoothed onto the skin after cleansing, will plump your skin giving you a more youthful appearance. The best part is, it’s made from 100% natural ingredients, giving you peace of mind about what you’re using on your body.

Decleor Youth Lotion

Decleor Youth Lotion

Many products which are aimed at mature skin are often thick and rich, which is fine for most but many of us don’t like that heavy feeling. This lotion from Decleor offers all of the potency of the thicker formulations in a light lotion which the skin drinks in within seconds of application. Hyaluronic acid ensures maximum moisturistation while rose milk leaves your skin smelling heavenly.

Decleor Lift Wrinkle Filler

Decleor Lift Wrinkle Filler

One of our most scientifically-developed products, this mask-style filler is especially effective at plumping out fine lines and wrinkles and contains a number of highly potent ingredients to do the job. It works not only on the surface of the skin but underneath, at a cellular level to encourage intercellular communication to plump up wrinkles.

Decleor Regenerating Eye and Lip Cream

Decleor Regenerating Eye and Lip Cream

The eyes and lips are probably the first place where people notice fine lines and wrinkles because they are the parts of the face which move the most during smiling, talking, squinting and eating, as well as all the other facial expressions between! This cream is delicate and sensitive, making it suitable for lips and eyes and will help to plump up crow’s feet and laughter lines effectively.

Superfoods to make you shine

food-japanese-food-photography-sushi

We hear the term ‘superfood’ being banded about now, more than ever, but what does the term really mean?

There is no official definition of a superfood, but it tends to refer to foods that are rich in levels of much-needed vitamins and minerals.

Many are also a reliable source of antioxidants, which protect our bodies from cell damage and help prevent certain diseases.

Whilst those cakes, crisps and fizzy drinks taste great, in reality they add very little nutritious value and can be a cause of feeling miserable, moody, anxious and agitated.

By adding a few nutrient packed foods to your diet you could be just a forkful away from a calmer, happier, healthier, more energetic you.

Whether they are boiled, poached or scrambled, there is no getting away from the fact that eggs are super good for you. They are a fantastic great source of protein, which when broken down are created into amino acids that are used to make the clever neurotransmitters that balance your moods. Enjoy for breakfast with tomatoes and avocado and you will start your day the happy way.

Prunes are packed with polyphenols, plant chemicals that apparently boost bone density by stimulating your bone-building cells. They are also a fabulous way to keep regular! Snack on a couple and know you are doing some good.

Rather than heading to the vending machine for a morning snack, go for nuts and seeds instead. They come packed with protein making amino acids that will keep your minds and mood balanced until lunchtime.

Chocolate doesn’t have been taken out of your diet altogether, but getting rid of white and milk versions is a good move. Dark chocolate contains flavonoids, which help lower blood pressure and improve blood flow to the brain and heart. Have a square a day, just to be on the safe side, but don’t over do it – everything in moderation.

If you want brain-boosting food, look no further than fish. Wild salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, sardines and anchovies are all jam packed with super healthy omega 3 fats that have been shown to increase serotonin levels in the brain, which boosts mood and happiness.

If you aren’t a fish fan but want to enjoy the benefits of omega three, try chia seeds. These tiny speckles of goodness can be added to cereal, salads, porridge and smoothies and will offer a blast of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and calcium.

A serotonin friendly food is the good old banana. Eat on the go or add to fortified cereals, include in smoothies or slice on rice cakes with peanut better and smile knowing you are being kind to your body and brain.

Want to be big and strong as well as heathy – go for spinach. Just half-cup provides more than five times your daily dose of Vitamin K, which helps blood clot and builds strong bones. Add to a vitamin packed breakfast smoothie and you will fill tip-top all day.

Unlike vegetables gown on the land, sea-grown vegetables are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, as well as bone-friendly calcium and magnesium, iron, potassium, iodine, and zinc. Seaweed is a great choice and you can enjoy with sushi or simply layer with brown rice, tomatoes and avocado.

You probably don’t know this but that kitchen cupboard lurker, cinnamon, can be used to help balance blood sugar levels, which in turn keeps cravings and hunger at bay.

Green tea is a super food that has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine to treat everything from headaches to depression. It is thought the leaves in this tea are rich in antioxidants as well as B vitamins, potassium, magnesium and healthy levels of caffeine. If you want to try to boost weight loss, reduce cholesterol, combat cardiovascular disease, and prevent Alzheimer’s disease, there are worse things to do than drink a cup of green tea.

So, step away from that coffee and cake and go for a superfood snack that will make you glow from head to toe.

Best Sun Creams for Your Skin Type

sun cream SPFIt may be the end of August but with promises of meandering Indian summers coming our way, it’s never too late to stock up on sun cream. You might still also be planning to jet away for a last break before the return to the daily grind, so we thought we’d take a look at the best sun protection for each skin type.

Dark Skin

Many people with darker skin tones don’t bother to wear sunscreen because they feel there’s no point if they never burn anyway. However, the sun can still be damaging, even if you’re darker skinned, so opting for some SPF is better than nothing. We’d recommend that you use Decleor BB Cream 24 Hour Hydration SPF15 Dark on your face as this will help to combat the signs of ageing whilst giving your face a sheer wash of colour.

Pale Skin

If you have the sort of skin which burns with only the lightest touch of sunshine then it’s super important for you to cover up, and cover up WELL. We’d recommend Dermalogica Protection 50 Sport SPF50 for your body, plus Dermalogica Solar Defence Booster SPF50 added to your moisturiser or foundation to giveyour face an extra boost and really protect you from those harmful rays.

Sensitive Skin

Having sensitive skin on your face can make it really tricky to find decent sun protection products which don’t irritate the skin or inflame the face and cause redness. Dermalogica UltraCalming Redness Relief Primer SPF20 is designed specifically for people who suffer with redness and sensitivity and will prime the face for make-up and reduce redness as well as offering an extra SPF boost.

Mature Skin

Mature skin can often feel weighed down by the thick, greasy formulas which are designed to protect younger skin from the sun. Dermalogica SkinPerfect Primer SPF30 is a primer designed for dry or mature skin which not only evens your skin tone and texture, allowing for a smoother application and longer lasting coverage of makeup but also gives a broad-spectrum sun protection to prevent further ageing of the skin.

Spot-Prone Skin

Many sun creams are often oil-based which makes them unsuitable for use on spot-prone or oily skin and finding products for this skin type can be a real pain. Dermalogica Matte Moisturiser SPF15 is perfect for those of us with oily skin which is prone to break-outs as it’s an oil-free formula and contains ingredients which actually absorb sebum and reduce shine.

Add coconut oil to your beauty routine

www.pexels.com

Last week we looked at why so many people love coconut oil. This week, as promised, we are talking about how to use this lush tropical delight as part of your beauty regime.

Coconut oil is a natural, do-it-all beauty ingredient which at room temperature it is a creamy solid that turns to liquid when heated to 76°F.

Let’s start at the beginning. Coconut oil makes the perfect moisturiser. When you come out of the shower rub a little into your warm clean skin and it will simply sink in. Not only will it lock in moisture and make your limbs smooth, but you will smell divine too.

One teaspoon of oil is all you need to remove your make-up. Massage warm, liquid oil onto your face it does an amazing job of breaking down mascara and foundation and leaves the area clean and hydrated. Once you’re done, wash your face as usual and pat dry.

The skin under your eyes is thin and delicate, which means it is one of the first places you will see fine lines. If you gently pat a little oil around the eye area you will help smooth lines and reduce puffiness, and dark circles.

If you hair is dry and dehydrated, look no further than a jar of coconut oil. Whilst you shower, melt your oil by running the jar under the warm water, then after shampooing, apply oil to you hair. Go strand by strand and twist your hair into a bun. Let it sink in and after five minutes rinse, towel dry and you will have shiny, healthy locks once again.

If it is frizz your hair needs help with, coconut can step in and help with this too. Rub a pea size amount of coconut oil between your fingers and once warm, apply it to the bottom inch of your hair for added protection. If your hair is thicker you can apply the oil from the mid-shaft to ends. Not only will this get rid of frizz but also leave your hair super-shiny and soft.

The antibacterial and antifungal properties of coconut oil are perfect for combatting scalp problems like dryness and dandruff. Massage a little oil into your scalp for 5 minutes, leave it in for around 15 minutes then rinse and shampoo thoroughly.

Smooth warm, slightly melted oil onto your legs and under you arms before shaving. The oil will allow your razor to glide across your skin, allowing for a super-close shave. The result will be smooth, hair free, moisturised legs. Do note that, as you would expect, oil is slippery, so take care you don’t nick your skin.

Another beauty win for coconut oil is an all year round lip balm. Decant a little oil into a small pot and simply swipe your lips as and when you need it so you are kissable 24/7.

Coconut oil is perfect for making your hands and nails feel amazing. It will gently strengthen your nails and hydrate you cuticle skin which is delicate and sometimes needs special care.

You can also use this wonder oil for cuts and grazes. A thin layer of this antiseptic and antibacterial balm will protect wounds from dirt and germs. It can also speed up the healing process by increasing cellular turnover and stimulating collagen. Oh and can reduce the chances of scarring.

Is there anything we have missed?

Let us know what you use coconut oil for as we would love to know.

Top 5 Tips for Applying Foundation

foundationThe current trend for foundation seems to be pretty full on; contouring is the preferred method by many and seems to require a dozen different shades of foundation, an extra hour in the day and a degree in geometry. If your foundation style is a little bit more laid back, you might appreciate some of these tips which will allow you to stick to just the one shade whilst making the most of your current skill-set.

Use a primer on your t-zone

If you have combination skin, you might find that you have an oily t-zone and dry or normal skin everywhere else, and this can mean that a primer can be too drying. Try using Decleor Velvet Mattifying Fluid just on your t-zone as a mattifying primer before you apply your foundation and it will not only make your foundation appear more even but will also make it last longer in the oily areas, where it can sometimes appear to melt off throughout the day.

Apply in the right order

Getting a natural look with proper coverage could really hinge on the order in which you apply your make-up. Use a colour corrector (green on areas of redness, lavender if you have areas of yellow tones, yellow on areas which appear purple if you have olive or darker skin) first, followed by your usual foundation and THEN a concealer to really hide any blemishes.

Match it to your neck

We know it sounds wacky, but unless you intent to apply your foundation all over your neck and décolletage, you should be matching your foundation colour to your neck, not your cheeks. This will give you a properly seamless look when you apply your foundation and should stop you from looking like you’re wearing a mask.

Think about your skin type

Thinking about your skin type is really important when choosing a foundation. If you’ve got naturally dry skin, opt for an oil-based foundation as anything else will soak in too easily and make your face even more dry. However, if you’ve got oily skin, opt for something oil-free to avoid looking like you’ve been dunking your face in a deep-fat fryer!

Use a dark circle cream

Sometimes, no amount of foundation, concealer or colour correction will truly cover your dark circles, so using a dedicated product can really help. Decleor Anti-Dark Circle Multi-Brightening Eye Care will not only help to reduce the appearance of dark circles around your eyes, but it will also help to actually reverse the root cause, making it a win-win kinda product!

Coconut oil – what’s all the fuss

www.pexels.com

There is no getting away from it; coconut oil is hot property in kitchen cupboards and the bathroom cabinets.

The media hype isn’t going away and new products are popping up all of the time.

But why, we hear you ask.

Well, the simple truth is that this lush, tropical oil is rich in fab fats that are super good for you – inside and out.

Coconut oil is consider by many, but not all, to be a super-food powerhouse.

As well as smelling amazing, it has endless benefits, and uses, when it comes to beauty, cooking, natural remedies and helping with cleaning jobs around the house.

So, let’s take a look at some of the ways it is good for you.

Coconut oil is packed with short term medium-chain saturated fatty acids (MCFAs), which are consider to be a ‘healthy’ kind of saturated fat compared to trans fat which is linked to heart problems and increased cholesterol levels. Our body cleverly converts these fats in the liver, immediately turning it into brain and muscle fuel rather than storing it as fat.

If you have digestion issues, coconut oil could help. It has been found to help ease disorders including irritable bowel syndrome and microbial related tummy bugs and contains anti microbial properties, which sooth bacteria, candida and even parasites.

We are starting to see that consuming the wrong kinds of fats in our diets can really impact on our hormones. Coconut oil contains fats that support our body’s natural hormone production and allow our mood and skin to level out and behave better.

The lauric, capric and caprylic acids in coconut oil all have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties which help build and maintain the immune system.

If you are looking for a skin saver, look no further than coconut oil. Forget fancy lotions and potions, this is a one-stop skin saving shop. It is an effective, pure moisturiser and thanks to natural antioxidant properties it works wonder on fine lines, wrinkles and irritation.

This oil is has been used for treating hair for centuries and with good reason – it works. Whether it is used as a mask, oil treatment, or added into homemade hair products, it will leave your locks luscious and soft.

Bearing all of this in mind, when it boils down to it, this is still an oil and therefore when eating it, you need to do so sparingly.

Coconut oil has the same calories as other fats, which is around 120 calories per tablespoon.

It probably isn’t a great idea to swap heart-healthy unsaturated fats found in things like nuts, seeds, and other plant oils for a saturated fat like coconut oil.

You can eat all kinds of heart-healthy fats every day but limit saturated fat to about 22 grams a day which is around 10% of your daily calorie intake.

Ensure you use coconut oil as part of a healthy, balanced diet packed with fruit and vegetables, at least eight glasses of water a day and moderate exercise.

Next week, we will look at how to introduce coconut oil into your diet, beauty regime and home.

The Best Ways to Fake Long Nails

Fake NailsIt’s a fact that some people are naturally blessed with the kind of nails which grow long and strong, never seem to break and are always neat and tidy. Then there are the rest of us whose nails split, break, get bitten or simply never seem to grow. There are treatments on the market which promise stronger, longer nails, like Decleor Ongles Nail Strengthening Serum which is a silky serum to restore strength and vitality to weak nails. However, we thought we’d look at some of the ways to fake long nails and see how well they work in the long run.

Press Ons

Most good chemists will sell sets of press-on nails which are ready manicured, or primed for paint, and literally just press onto your nails with a sticky pad or special nail glue. They’re pretty quick and easy to use…just don’t expect them to last a very long time. We’ve lost count of the amount of times we’ve used them only to look down and only see NINE perfectly manicured nails still in place!

Acrylic Nails

These are probably the most popular types of nail extensions and involve the process of a liquid polymer being applied over a plastic nail to create a long nail which can then be shaped and painted. They last really well but can cause a lot of damage to the existing nail because of the strong chemicals used. After removing acrylic nails, you’ll need to apply Dermalogica Multivitamin Hand and Nail Treatment regularly to help your nails recover.

Wraps

Wraps can be used to strengthen your own nails to allow them to grow without breaking and are probably the least damaging method of achieving long nails. They’re basically sheets of linen or slik which are glued to the nails in layers and built up to achieve strength. They’re fairly pricey and don’t last as well as acrylics, but the damage is less in the long run.

Shellac

Shellac is a gel nail polish which is painted onto your own nails, but hardens to a strong layer which could help you to grow your own nails longer if they’re usually brittle or prone to splitting. The process of applying shellac is really simple, not hugely expensive (in fact, it can be done at home with a few bits of kit) and allows you to make the most of your own nails without false extensions.

Gel Nails

Another type of artificial nail, gel nails are formed by applying a premixed, liquid chemical gel which is then set under a UV lamp. The heat and light “cure” the nails so they can be shaped and styled as desired. Non-UV gels are formed by an additional chemical activator over the gel. They’re usually the more expensive nails to have applied but they last well – in fact, they can’t be removed with chemicals, they need to be filed down manually to get them off!

After applying any sort of chemicals to the hands, it’s wise to use Decleor Hand Cream to protect and nourish the hands.

Seaside happiness in the UK

pexels - seaside

As we approach mid-August you might feel it is too late to take a summer a break?

We disagree.

Whilst there is still time to book a flight and get out to the Med, why not make life easy and stay somewhere closer to home?

There some exceptional seaside options in the UK that make the perfect holiday destination whatever your age and budget.

We know you can’t count on the weather to be kind, but pack jumpers and umbrellas as well as sunglasses and we think that you’ll have fun in any one of these fab locations on home shores.

Studland Bay is quite simply, three miles of perfect sand that stretches along the Isle of Purbeck. Not only is the water calm and clean, but it backs onto a green, woody National Trust wildlife reserve – a truly wonderful combination. You won’t find arcades and fun fairs in this part of Dorset but with deer dashing in and out of the woods and fresh air flowing into your lungs, this is a little piece of paradise you will remember forever.

If you are looking for award winning beaches, look no further than Woolacombe in deepest, delightful Devon. The water is clean, the faculties are outstanding and life-guards ensure safety for swimmers and surfers, making it a very popular destination. There’s also a friendly village full of pubs, restaurants and places to stay and only a stone’s throw away you’ll find attractions, events and entertainment for all the family.

Suffolk offers a variety of seaside resorts but Southwold has to be the best. This historic town is a firm favourite of many who go back time and again to enjoy a warm welcome and a little bit of traditional seaside fun. Whether you spend your days in a bright beach hut, play hide and seek in the sand dunes or go fishing in the harbour, we are pretty sure you will fall in love with Southwold too.

Once at the cutting edge of coastal holidays in the UK, Skegness feel on hard times when low cost airfares made sunny Spain super-cheap. However with a cool new aquarium as well as seaside staple bumper cars, slot machines, and jaw-cracking sticks of rock (don’t tell your dentist), you can do worse than spending a weekend in ‘Skeggy’.

If you want to get away from everything, the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides is the place to go. Home to amazing beaches as well as wildlife, including golden eagles and red deer makes this a must-visit location for those who want to escape the rat race and go back to basics. Dalmor and Dal Beag beaches offer first class surfing, but wetsuits are a must as the water gets pretty chilly but the view makes it all worth it.

Watergate Bay in Cornwall is one of the most breathtaking beaches in the UK and loved by many. The soft sand is perfect for families wanting a safe day out and the surf brings beginners and pros alike to the beach all year long. There are a range of watersports on offer, fine food can be enjoyed at Jamie Oliver’s restaurant Fifteen and if you are looking for cream teas, you will be spoilt for choice.

Sat on the stunning Pembrokeshire coastline, Tenby with it’s pretty a pastel buildings and bustling streets, is a charming destination this summer. There are miles of outstanding sun-trap beaches to the north, south and west that are perfect for the brave to swim in, and the more refrained to paddle in. The quaint cobbled streets are loaded with pubs, shops and restaurants where visitors can while away the hours and enjoy a little bit of Welsh R&R.

So, if you think you are missing out because you aren’t in Marbella this summer, think again.
