How to heal a hangover

Nothing says welcome to a new year than a hangover!

A splitting headache, feeling sick, being sick, suffering with dizziness and sweats, as well as those oh so embarrassing flashbacks to the night before, can all be the consequence of drinking too much.

The problem with alcohol is that while it tastes good and can turn you into a demon on the dance floor, it can also make you feel terrible the next day.

We hate to break it to you but there are no cures when it comes to hangovers (unless you just don’t drink), however, we know people like to party and so we are here to help ease the pain.

First of all, do not drink on an empty stomach. Eating a bowl of pasta or having eggs on toast before you go out will help your body to absorb your drinks and stop you from falling over!

It is also important to only drink what your body can cope with, so ease up on those shots and have at least one glass of water, if not two, between each cocktail or pint of beer.

This isn’t to do with a hangover, but if you are out in a pub or club, keep an eye on your drink and do not accept drinks from strangers, Yes, they may just be feeling festive, but drinking a spiked drink could leave you with more than a hangover, so stay with your friends and stay safe.

When you get home, don’t dive for another bottle of wine or beer from the fridge, instead have a couple of slices of wholemeal toast, drink plenty of water and take a glass up to bed with you too.

The next day
When it comes to hangovers, it is all about rehydrating your poor body so it can get to work dealing with all you have inflicted on it, so drink plenty of water. We would suggest that you avoid the ‘hair of the dog’ approach because while some people say this works, drinking even more alcohol when you are already feeling awful, won’t help, so steer clear.

Ease the pain
You might reach for pills when your head feels like it is splitting open, but don’t overdo it with these! For a healthier alternative try milk thistle as it is believed this will help your liver process alcohol faster, so take it before you go out and again the following morning and it may well help you to feel more human again.

Eat something
While the thought of food might make you gag, it is going to help you feel better, sooner. It’s all about the baby steps, so start with something bland, like a piece of toast or a digestive biscuit, and if that stays down, a banana could be a good move. Chicken noodle soup is packed with protein and a good source of vitamins and minerals, so this is a good way to top up depleted resources and ease a sore tummy!

Vitamin C
When you have treated your body to a really big party, it needs to be replenished with vitamins. If you can stomach a glass of orange juice that will give you a good dose of Vitamin C, add a multivitamin and things will start to get better, but you will have give them time to work.

Get clean
Have a shower. Slobbing out in front of the TV, feeling dirty and sweaty from the night before is a sure way to keep a hangover going. Shower, wash your hair, clean your face and put on clean clothes (even if it is pjs) and that will help you feel a little fresher, if nothing else.

Move around
We know you don’t feel like even standing up when you are hungover, but exercise can help to restore your body and mind. A walk in the fresh air, a little sunshine and a light breeze all have wonderful restorative powers and the metabolism boost can help rid the toxins from your body a little faster.

Get some sleep
If all else fails, go back to bed! Rest is your friend when you have a hangover, so if nothing else works, an extra hour or two of sleep will help a lot!

And the next time you go for those BOGF cocktails, remember the pain they cause the next day and put the brakes on.

Foods to Eat, Post-Christmas

Chopped dark chocolate

While we don’t subscribe to the idea that you need to eat certain things to get rid of toxins in your body (that’s what your liver and kidneys are there for, you don’t need a special diet!), we do believe that the body needs to replenish certain things in order for it to run properly. We often find that random cravings mean we’re lacking in a particular nutrient (cheese for calcium, bananas for potassium, etc.) so we thought we’d take a look at some foods your body, and particularly your skin, is probably crying out for after the indulgence of Christmas.

Fatty fish

Fatty fish contain rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for maintaining skin health. Christmas is usually spent indulging in salty foods like crisps and nuts, and drinking alcohol, both of which will leave your skin dehydrated, and omega-3 fatty acids are necessary to keep skin thick, supple and moisturised.

Walnuts

If you’re not quite ready to give up all of your Christmassy snacks, making a substitution might help. Walnuts richer than most other nuts in both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, giving your skin a good dose of what it needs to be healthy. They also contain a good dose of zinc, which is essential for your skin to function properly as a barrier, as well as necessary for wound healing and combating both bacteria and inflammation.

Sweet Potato

Sweet potato is another thing to eat, post-Christmas, as it contains high doses of vitamin A, giving your body the ability to absorb antioxidants which are  incorporated into your skin to protect your skin cells from sun exposure. This may help prevent sunburn, cell death and dry, wrinkled skin. We particularly like them cut into wedges and baked with a little coconut oil and smoked paprika!

Dark Chocolate

You’ve probably had your fill of sweet treats over the last few days, but if you still fancy something which feels like a naughty treat, opt for dark chocolate instead. It’s jam-packed with antioxidants which help to give you thicker, more well-hydrated skin. One study found that eating 20 grams of high-antioxidant dark chocolate per day could allow your skin to withstand over twice as much UV radiation before burning versus eating low-antioxidant chocolate!

Green Tea

Now that you’ve stepped away from the Baileys for a few days, opting for something non-alcoholic and nutritious is a good idea, especially if you plan to indulge again at New Year. The catechins found in green tea are powerful antioxidants that can protect your skin against sun damage and reduce redness as well as improve its hydration, thickness and elasticity.

How to beat Christmas cabin fever

Christmas all about fun and food, family and friends, but it can also be a time for frustration and dare we say it, www.pexels.comirritation if cabin fever sets in. There is no doubt that if you spend a whole week stuck in the house stuffing Quality Street and drinking your body weight in cocktails, things could be anything other than festive. We believe that with a little planning, a good time can be had by all, and we have some tips that we hope will make this a very happy Christmas

Start the day the right way
While you might fancy cold pizza and Pringles for breakfast, this really isn’t going to do your mood, waistline or skin any good. Sensible maybe, but a bowl of porridge, made with semi-skimmed milk and topped with blueberries, scrambled eggs with rye toast or a vitamin bursting green smoothie with oats and spinach, will all set you up for the day ahead, and keep your patience levels in place too. During the day, don’t just snack on junk, but eat good, healthy meals and this will, we promise, keep you feeling bright and shiny just like the lights on your tree.

Have a shower
You might want to slob out in your PJs but we promise that having a shower, cleansing, toning and moisturising your skin, and putting on fresh clothes will make you feel in better spirits, even if you do have a hangover from the champagne the night before.

Go for a Walk
Walking might not bring you out in a sweat, but it is a pretty good way to get some mood boosting exercise out in the fresh air and away from any disagreements over the washing up. Grab your trainers, take the dog, close the front door, and as you walk, you’ll burn off some of those Christmas calories and those feel-good endorphins will get to work and make you feel happy – we hope!

Play a game
We aren’t talking X-Box here. Step away from screens and instead, get everyone together for an afternoon of old-fashioned board game fun. Scrabble will put the brain cells to work that have been resting over the Christmas break, Monopoly will bring out that competitive streak in you and good old snakes and ladders is a crowd pleaser everyone can enjoy. Why not try this in 2018 and we think it will fast become a tradition you carry on year after year because it brings people together and makes them feel good.

Recycle
Don’t just put everything straight in the bin! Sort out the wrapping paper and cardboard that can be recycled, as well as the bottles and cans and take a walk to the local recycle centre. Not only will this keep things out of the landfill, but it will also give you a reason to get out of the house and get some fresh air. You can apply the same principles to any unwanted gifts, as well as anything that is gathering dust in your home, and take it all along to a charity shop – exercise and a serving of feeling good, what’s not to like?

Shake it out
Going to a party? Don’t just sit and chat with your family and friends, get up on the dance floor and strut your stuff to Kylie and Bieber. Dancing, just like walking, is a good way to clear a few calories and you will be amazed at the slight ache in your calves the next day after a good old boogie.

Set your limits
There is no doubt that alcohol can bring your mood down, so why not take a break for a day or two over the festive period? Leave the beer and wine in the fridge, go for water, herbal teas and mocktails and you may feel better for it as you become rehydrated and the toxins are flushed away.

Whatever you do, have a very happy Christmas.

Beat The Christmas Hangover

Beat The Christmas Hangover
Royalty-free Image

Even if you’re not a massive drinker, the overindulgence at Christmas time is enough to make any of us feel like we’ve woken up with a hangover, and no-one needs to be dealing with a hangover at this time of year! When we were younger, a quick Drive-Through breakfast and full-fat Coca-Cola would’ve been more than enough to cure a hangover, but now we’re older we have to be a bit more selective with our hangover remedies! Here are a few tricks we keep up our sleeves to ward off the Christmas (food or drink) hangovers:

HYDRAAAAATE!!!!

Yes, we’re shouting this at you, because we’ve said it SO MANY TIMES! Your body cannot function without adequate hydration and with all the mulled wine and salty food flying around at Christmas, there’s a good chance you’re dehydrated. Try to alternate booze with a glass of water throughout the day and try to drink at least a pint of water before bed. You can also give your skin a boost with Decleor Hydration Discovery Kit.

Go For a Walk

We know that exercise is the last thing on most people’s minds at Christmas but going for a walk can really improve how you feel. Exercise gets the blood pumping, encourages healing, reduces bloating and can just generally help to clear your head.

Eat Something

Food is probably not all that appealing right now, between the turkey and the After Eight mints, but treating yourself to a healthy, amino-rich breakfast will vastly improve how your body deals with a hangover. Our suggestion would be wholemeal toast, smoked salmon, poached eggs and asparagus as this contains a whole bunch of vitamins, minerals and essential acids such as taurine and cysteine that the body needs.

Rest

To be honest, your instinct to just lie in bed or sit VERY STILL in a chair for the rest of the day is probably spot-on. The body needs rest to be able to recover and heal properly, so if you’ve got the time to do it, just chill. Take the opportunity to use Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque to add deep hydration and nutrients back into your hard-working skin.

Milk Thistle

Taking milk thistle both before and after drinking alcohol has a protective effect on the liver. According to Schwabe Pharma, “Milk Thistle [is a] traditional herbal medicinal product used to relieve the symptoms associated with occasional over indulgence of drink and food such as indigestion and upset stomach, exclusively based upon long-standing use as a traditional remedy”.

Beat the Bloat

As well as the parties, presents and more parties, at Christmas there seems to be the feeling that we have to eat and drink all we www.pexels.comsee!

While it is nice to enjoy festive food and the odd tipple, going mad at the buffet table isn’t great for your waistline, and it can leave you feeling bloated, uncomfortable and lethargic.

We have had a look at how you can beat the bloat this Christmas and still enjoy the goodies that are on offer, and slump in front of the TV without feeling totally out of control.

Keep an eye on portions
One of the most common cause of bloating is over indulgence, which comes as part and parcel of Christmas for many of us. Try to avoid eating massive meals as this can leave you feeling uncomfortably full and bloated, and instead, go eat less but more often, and you will be able to enjoy what’s on off but without suffering.

Know your carbs
Those white bread sandwiches, loaded baguettes and mayo heavy pasta salads might look tempting, but they can actually slow down your digestion and will also mean you aren’t getting the fibre you need in your diet. Why not think about swapping these refined carbs for wholegrains which will give you the fibre you need, will help with digestion and also keep bloating at bay. Quinoa, brown rice and wholegrain bread are all great, tasty options, and if you start your day with a bowl of porridge, with a sprinkle of cinnamon for a Christmas twist, you will feel so much better and bloating will be the last thing on your mind.

Put the Spanx away
While you might reach for those super holding, control pants when it comes to fitting into that Christmas dress, you could be contributing to the problem of bloating. If you know you have big meals coming up, why not go for floaty clothing and easy to wear layers, and then enjoy the day and your food without your clothes cutting into you.

Drink tea
Put the sparking wine and fizzy pop away, and sip on tea if you are filling a little fuller than you would like. Mint and ginger are known for their health benefits and can just take the edge of bloating.

Don’t eat too late
Having a three course meal and bottle of wine at 9pm might feel like a good idea at the time, but may not feel the same way when you are trying to sleep and are wide awake at 3am. Lying down too soon after eating can make it harder for your stomach to digest food and can cause acid reflux and you don’t want either, especially if you have a busy day ahead with family and friends.

Think about salt
Crisps, peanuts, slices of pizza and dips all contain salt and when you eat too much, your body may well try to retain water and this can lead to uncomfortable bloating. Ease up on processed food, add spices to food rather than salt, ensure you get your five a day (no, salty, greasy chips don’t count) and always drink plenty of water.

Watch the wind
Cabbage, sprouts, garlic and onions are all on the table at Christmas, but these festive favourites can cause bloating and wind, so go easy on them!

Water, water, water
We talk about it all the time, but it is vital to drink plenty of still water if you want to keep hydrated. Add slices of lemon and sprigs of mint, go for filtered options and leave the fizz for a while to ensure you don’t go pop!

Get some exercise
You aren’t going to go for a 10k run on Christmas Day, but a walk in the park after lunch or a bike ride on Boxing Day not only gives you some fresh air and takes any family tensions away, but the exercise will be good for your health and waistline too.

Whatever you do this Christmas, have a great time!

Are You Applying Your Skincare in the Correct Order?

Are You Applying Your Skincare in the Correct Order?
Royalty-free Image

Every man and their dog knows the old adage “cleanse, tone, moisturise”, but these days most of us has a skin routine which includes more than just these three basic products. So, if you’re using serums, sunscreens, and any number of other products on your face, do you know the correct order to apply them in? We’ve got the lowdown on what you should be doing:

Cleanser

Okay, so it’s a bit of a no-brainer that cleansing should be done first, and that’s how it’s always been. This is because you want to create a completely clean canvas on which to put your other products. Keep doing it, because this bit hasn’t changed!

Toner

Honestly, we’re not trying to trick you, we promise things do get different after this step! However, toner should still be the second step in your skincare routine as this helps to prep the skin for other products.

Serum

Serums are essentially just shots of extremely concentrated nutrients, hydrators, and antioxidants that really amp up your skin health as soon as you apply them. People often skip out on using them, but they’re honestly the heavy lifters of your skincare routine.

Eye Cream

Eye creams tend to have a much lighter formulation than moisturisers and need to be applied before, otherwise they don’t absorb properly. When it comes to eye cream, the more hydrating the product, the better condition your under eye area will be in.

Moisturiser

NOW is the moment you apply your moisturiser, and which one you opt for is entirely up to you! Use our guide to find out what your skin type is and buy a moisturiser to complement your complexion to improve and perfect your skin’s level of hydration.

Face Oil

Believe it or not, facial oils are best applied at this stage of your routine. Oils are best at sealing in other products so using a facial oil now will ensure that everything you’ve applied up to this point is working optimally for your skin.

Sunscreen

Last but not least (in fact, possibly last but MOST) should be your sunscreen. Protecting your skin from the sun will halt the ageing process and protect your sun’s harmful rays, and it should be applied once everything else is on your face (but before make-up, obvs).

Keep calm, it’s only Christmas

www.pexels.comSay ‘Christmas’ to a friend and you either get a smile or a look of sheer horror, depending on how organised they are, and what they have left to do before the big day.

Let’s face it, Christmas is meant to be fun, not a big ball of cash strapped anxiety, so while there could be the odd argument, why not follow our festive steps so you can be as cool out as your glass of ice cold wine.

It is all in the planning
OK, this might be a little bit late, but even if you start to plan now, you are less likely to end up in a pickle in the coming weeks. Make a list (once you have read this) of the Christmas presents you need to buy, food that needs to be ordered, dates when you are busy and you will soon start to get a clearer idea of what is left to do. This is also the time to look in your wardrobe and work out if you have all the clothes you need for your parties and events, if not, pop to a local charity shop, and as well as finding something new for you, you can take the things you don’t need and do a good deed for someone else.

Have a budget
The longer you leave it when it comes to buying gifts, the more likely it is you will spend too much on the wrong things. Work out who you need to buy Christmas presents for, look at what you think they would like and set a budget. If money is tight, have a shop around and see where you can find offers or make savings and remember that a well thought out gift that is beautifully wrapped, will mean so much more than a tenner bunged in a card!

Progress not perfection
We are going to say this once, stop trying to make everything perfect and just go your own way this Christmas! Step away from social media feeds that are full of showcase homes and bright white smiles. Just remember that those picture perfect images will often be 100% staged, and there will be cable carnage hiding behind that pristine Christmas tree snap. If you stop putting pressure on yourself to be perfect, there is more chance of keeping calm and having a great time, which is what matters.

Mediate
If you find that things are starting to get on top of you, find a quiet spot and for a few minutes simply sit and focus on your breathing. By doing this, you will be able to slow down, see what really has to be done and you can then move forwards, calmly.

Make it
If you want to show you care, save some money and do something for the environment, why not get crafty this Christmas? Set aside an afternoon and you can get to work making your own Christmas cards (hand deliver the local ones if you want a breath of fresh air), make your own crackers for the table, cook cookies and fudge for family and friends and if you feel really creative, you not make a festive, floral wreath for your door. All of this might sound like hard work, but when you put on some carols, light a scented candle and get stuck in, your mind will be taken away from the chaos and you will start to feel calm and enjoy the moment.

Think about you
We know only too well that it is easy to leave yourself behind when you are looking after everyone else, but if you don’t you are going to crash and burn. If you are out shopping, stop and have a cuppa and piece of cake, if you don’t have time to go the gym then walk to the recycling centre with your cans and bottles, and why not get away from it all and enjoy a calming facial or massage?

Get some sleep
The wrapping can wait, your health cannot. At this time of year it is vital that you try to get a good six to eight hours sleep as this can help to boost your mood, improve your memory and allow you to keep going. A warm bath before you go to bed, no screens in the bedroom and a little lavender oil on your pillow can help take things down a notch or two so you can zone out and get some rest.

You see, Christmas might be a loaded event, but it shouldn’t cause you anxiety and grief, so try to enjoy the atmosphere and fun and make this your calmest festive break ever.

Perfect Your Pout Without Fillers

Perfect Your Pout Without Fillers
Royalty-free Image

In the past, cosmetic surgery was reserved for Hollywood stars and the super-rich, but with the advent of non-surgical treatments like lip fillers, almost everyone knows someone who’s had some type of work done. In fact, last summer, one clinic reported a 200% surge in requests for lip fillers, and we suspect the numbers are just as high around the UK. However, if you want a plumped pout without the pain and price tag, we’ve got some tips for a more gentle alternative:

Exfoliate

If your lips are dry and cracked, the skin contracts and makes your lips look thinner. Getting rid of the dry skin is the first thing you should be doing, using a little Elemis Gentle Rose Exfoliator. Buff the lips using a small amount on your finger (making sure you don’t swallow any!) and wipe away with a clean cloth to get rid of all of your dry, flaky skin.

Plump

The next step is to give your lips plenty of moisture and plumping action, with some Elemis Pro-Definition Eye and Lip Contour Cream.  It’s a rich eye and lip contouring cream containing active plant stem cells from edelweiss, combined with skin supporting mafane flower and alaria esculenta. Thin, dry skin around the eyes and vertical lip lines appear firmer, plumper and re-densified.

Conceal

Using a concealer on your lips not only gives them a better base for lipstick to attach to, it also allows you to create a canvas on which to over-line your lips a little. As long as you don’t go too mad (think Coco Chanel rather than Coco the Clown!), you can create a slightly larger lip which looks totally natural and blends beautifully with the surrounding skin.

Gloss

Adding a dab of lip gloss to just the middle of your pout can have a surprising effect. We’re not sure how (something to do with deflection of light, maybe?) but glossing the centre of your pout makes your lips look much fuller. If you want matte lips, you can create a similar effect by adding a little concealer or white eyeliner in the centre and applying your lipstick over the top.

Colour

When thinking about what lipsticks to use, the darker you go, the more you’re going to shrink your lips. Dark lipstick creates a more defined edge against your natural lip line and make the lips look much smaller. Pinks are apparently the best colours for faking a fuller pout.

Start your day, the caffeine free way

www.pexels.comThe dark mornings and cold nights of winter, can make us feel that the only way we can start the day is with a strong cup of coffee, or two. While this isn’t the end of the world, it also isn’t the only way to feel energised first thing.

Some people will say don’t touch caffeine at all, others will wax lyrical about the buzz it gives you. We aren’t going to preach to you, but we are going to give you some ideas so you can start your day the non-caffeine way, and still have a spring in your step.

Start the night before
This might sound back to front, but having an actual bedtime routine that you stick to, can actually make you feel more energised when you wake up in the morning. Turn your screens off at least an hour before you go to bed, relax in a warm bath, read a book, make sure your bedroom isn’t too hot and aim to get around seven to eight hours of sleep a night. This might sound a bit rigid, but we think you will be pretty impressed with how it helps you to feel so much more alive and all without the help of that extra shot cappuccino!

Step away from the snooze button
It might be really tempting to hit the snooze button on your alarm again and again, but do so at your peril. Your body is ready to wake up the first time the alarm goes off, and by snoozing it gets confused. You go back into a deep sleep, which means when you do finally get up, you are dragging yourself around, looking for the caffeine hit to bring you to life. When the alarm goes off, get up, and start your day and you will do it with more energy than ever before.

Drink water
We tell you this all the time but you need to drink water, if you want to keep hydrated. If you drink enough water you will feel more alert, your digestive system will work better, your body will be able to flush out toxins and your skin will look bright and healthy – what’s not to like? Put a glass of water on your bedside table and sip at little when you wake, then have a cup of warm water and lemon first thing to cleanse your body and awaken your senses.

Eat breakfast
A strong coffee with sugar might wake you up, but you will crash and burn, so why not make some changes? As well as drinking water, have a protein rich breakfast, maybe eggs with rye toast, porridge with a handful of almonds, or a vitamin bursting spinach smoothie. These are all nutritious and will give you a good start to the day without the caffeine you have always relied on to give you that get up and go you need.

Take some exercise
If you want to take caffeine out of your life, add exercise into the mix. Whether it is a walk, bike ride, yoga class or swim, a workout will give you a burst of feel good endorphins which leave you feeling alert and happy, without the need for the high from a caffeine buzzing flat white. You might also find that a regular massage will ease those aching limbs that can come with sports, and it gives you a chance to chill out for a bit, which is really important.

Make a list
Our brains can get full and jumbled given all the pressures of modern-day life. If you wake up and immediately feel anxious about the day ahead, coffee might have been your way to see clearly, but this isn’t a long-term strategy for happiness. Having a list of what you need to do will help you to focus on the important things and you won’t need an espresso to sweat the small stuff.

Over time all of these habits will start to become the new norm and you will wonder how the old, caffeine powered you managed to get through the day!

What Would We Include in an Ultimate Beauty Box?

What Would We Include in an Ultimate Beauty Box?
Royalty-free Image

Beauty boxes are massive business, with many different companies across the globe offering beauty-lovers the opportunity to have five beauty products sent to them each month. The boxes are usually curated according to a set of questions asked about the subscriber and usually include at least one full size product, fitting within a certain budget.

With Christmas just around the corner, we thought we’d put together a list of products that we’d include in an ULTIMATE beauty box, where budget is no object!

Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream

This is possibly the priciest item on our shelves, but there’s a good reason for this…it works REALLY WELL. Celebrities from Yasmin Le Bon to Kate Hudson to Lily James adore this anti-ageing moisturiser which has been shown to reduce the depth of wrinkles, improve skin firmness, tone and hydration within 15 days.

Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream

This skin smoothing cream from Dermalogica is one of our best-selling products and has been given a whole new and improved formulation for 2018. Incorporating Active HydraMesh Technology™ Skin Smoothing Cream 2.0 will infuse the skin with 48 hours of continuous hydration and help protect against environmental stress while simultaneously locking in moisture and protecting skin’s beneficial bacteria.

Decleor Aroma Nutrition- Satin Softening Dry Oil

When we were thinking about what to put in our beauty box, we were thinking about which products we’d be genuinely excited to receive ourselves, and thus dry oil from Decleor was definitely on the list. It’s scented with a subtle, delicate and beautifully feminine fragrance, this versatile dry oil leaves your body and face feeling softer and more comfortable, your hair nourished and looking shiny.

Jan Marini Bioglycolic Resurfacing Body Scrub

It’s hard to choose our favourite products from the Jan Marini range because they’re all so good, but this resurfacing body scrub is definitely high on the list. It combines highly concentrated glycolic acid with exfoliating particles and key botanical extracts for noticeably smoother glowing skin that is silky smooth to the touch.

Decleor Luxuriant Nourishing Lip Balm

Decleor Luxuriant Nourishing Lip Balm is a balm that nourishes the feel of lips with moisture, and protects from dryness. Its luxuriant texture melts on the lips leaving them feeling supple and soft, with restored comfort. It’s an ideal product to include in our ultimate beauty box and one that we think customers would come back to buy again and again.
