Five Places You Don’t Expect to Get Acne

Five Places You Don’t Expect to Get Acne
Photo by Audrey Jackson on Unsplash

For most of use, when we hear the word “acne” we think of someone usually in their teens and usually with spots on their face. However, this is a totally inaccurate perception of what an acne sufferer is. Acne can occur at any age, and adult acne doesn’t always manifest on your face. With this in mind, we thought we’d look at five place where you don’t expect to acne, but sometimes still do:

Scalp

When you think logically, the scalp is actually a really obvious place for acne to occur – it’s a sebaceous area which produces oils, and rarely gets exfoliated, unless you have very short hair. This means that it’s easy for the pores to get blocked with excess oils and for acne to occur. Acne can also be exacerbated by underlying dryness, so treating your scalp with Elemis Exotic Frangipani Monoi Hair and Scalp Mask would be a good place to start.

Buttocks

Okay, so no-one wants to talk about having a spotty bottom, but believe us, it’s more common than you may think. One issue with the buttocks is that they deal with a lot of friction but often aren’t included in your exfoliation routine. Investing in an Elemis Body Detox Skin Brush and regularly dry brushing the area will dramatically improve the appearance of acne on your buttocks.

Armpits

Acne in the armpits is usually exacerbated by shaving, so opting for a different hair removal method may help. However, if you absolutely must shave, ensure you prep your skin with Elemis Sea Lavender and Samphire Salt Scrub to lift the hairs and prevent your pores from becoming clogged.

Ears

The ears are another place where the skin has similar oil-producing properties for the face, which means that acne is able to form there. Acne in the ear is generally caused by a buildup of dirt, shampoo and earwax and can be quite tricky to treat. The best thing is to leave them to heal naturally and don’t be tempted to pick at or pop any spots that occur. While we don’t advocate putting anything IN your ear, you can try dabbing a little Dermalogica Breakout Clearing Booster onto spots which erupt on the outer part of the ear.

Neck

Acne doesn’t just stop where your face ends – spots will often develop on your neck and even your upper chest, too. The best way to deal with this is to invest in an acne-busting kit like Dermalogica Clear Start Clearly Matte Kit and make sure you include your neck and chest in your daily routine.

How to find self-compassion for you

www.pexels.comHave you ever noticed that you are way too harsh on yourself?

That you are worried about what other people think about you?

You’re afraid of doing something wrong?

Letting others down?

Always trying to be perfect, but end up feeling like a failure?

We think it’s time for this to stop, and that 2020 is all about learning how to show yourself some self-compassion each day. We have some top tips about how you can look after yourself more and make your space, a better place.

Breathe in essential oils
We are massive fans of essential oils as they can help you to deal with things like anxiety and insomnia, as well as being super soothing for your skin, and they are part of the self-compassion mix. Every time you start to hear those negative comments coming into your head, just stop, find an oil like geranium, rose or lavender and put a little on your wrists. As you breathe in and out, take in their soothing scent and let them get to work.

Inhale C-O-M-P-A-S-S-I-O-N.

Exhale N-E-G-A-T-I-V-ITY.

Repeat five times.

You might find that using oils in the bath is another way to get the benefits, so at the end of a long day, rather than scroll through social media or binge on a TV box set, run the water, get in and relax.

Self-compassion meditation
Meditation might seem like a buzzword, but this form of self-compassion can help you find inner peace and calm. It’s a little like the breathing exercise above but with added visualisation.

1. Close your eyes, take in a few deep breaths and bring your attention to the present moment.
2. Visualise someone you love unconditionally. Your mum, partner, best friend, or even your dog and imagine they are with you under a clear, blue sky.
3. Put your hands on your chest and on top of your heart and feel the love you have for that person, or pet.
4. Feel this love and connect to the compassion you have within yourself.
5. Take a series of deep breaths, in and out, and just feel the love you have for them and for you.
6. When you’re ready, slowly open your eyes and bring your attention back to the room.

Nourish Your Body
As well as nourishing your mind, you also have to nourish your body if you really want to look after yourself. Our thoughts and feelings can positively, or negatively affect our bodies, so if you can build a healthy relationship with the two by enjoying a good, well balanced diet then things can change. We aren’t saying you have to become a vegan overnight, or that you can’t enjoy treats, but make sure you get your five a day, drink plenty of water, try wholegrains and give the take-aways and energy drinks a miss because they won’t do you any favours.

Know you are enough
Many of us struggle with feelings of inadequacy and try to live up to impossible expectations. It’s easy in our digital age to feel as if something is missing in our lives if we aren’t always winning. In a ‘culture of more’, we don’t always appreciate what we have and it’s easy to look for more and more things to fill a void. You don’t need to do that and can simply say that at this very time, you are enough. It sounds hard, and it might take time, but simply saying you are enough several times a say is the kind of self-compassion we are talking about.

Self-awareness is key to self-compassion
We need to stop the negative self-talking when it starts because this energy can really bring us down. When you start to feel that things are getting a little dark or too much, stop, sit down and take a moment to remember that the power is YOU! If there’s a friend who brings you down, don’t spend too much time with them. If travelling on the tube makes you feel claustrophobic, take the bus. If your job is just too much for you, look around for another one or speak to your manager about making changes. If you can spot the triggers that make life hard, you can put self-compassion into place and change these toxic patterns.

Exercising in Winter – How To Do it Right

Exercising in Winter - How To Do it Right
Photo by Fil Mazzarino on Unsplash

Running is such a great exercise, as it’s something that you can do almost anywhere, at any time  and you don’t really have to spend any money to be able to do it. However, running in the winter isn’t always as pleasant, but there are things that you can do to ensure that your body doesn’t suffer from running in the cold weather. Here are five tips to help you carry on running in the winter and make sure that you do it right.

Use Hand Cream

Even if you wear gloves while you run, your hands are an area which can suffer from spending too much time in the elements. Runners often complain of chapped skin on their hands when they run in the winter and gloves don’t always protect you. The best way to ensure that your hands don’t suffer from spending too much time outside is to use a protective hand cream like Elemis Pro-Radiance Hand and Nail Cream. It forms a silky barrier that locks in moisture and will protect your skin against the harsh cold weather.

Prep Your Muscles

Warming up your muscles before you go outside in any weather is essential so performing a dynamic warm up inside the house before you start is essential. However, using an oil to massage your muscles will also help to get them prepped for running in cold weather and Elemis Musclease Active Body Oil is the perfect product. It contains a synergy of ingredients which helps ease muscle pain and joint stress and will protect your legs against the cold.

Protect Your Face

Even when you bundle yourself up in protective clothing to run in the winter, your face is often the one area of skin that would still be exposed to the elements. You can’t wear something to cover your whole face as this is just plain dangerous so using a protective face cream such as Decleor Cica Botanic Balm is the best way to protect the exposed skin. The balm is perfect for irritated and very dry skin and contains healing essential oils for visible skin repair. It provides a much-needed wash of deep and long lasting skin hydration which will mean that your skin doesn’t dry and crack whilst running in the cold weather.

Use Suncream

You may think that running in the winter means that you don’t need to protect your skin from the sun, but actually, using some form of skin protection all year round is essential if you want to avoid damage from the sun’s rays. Decleor Ultra Protective Anti-Wrinkle Cream SPF50 Face is a high factor sun cream which will protect sensitive and mature skin types and will help to reduce reactions caused by sun exposure, as well as helping to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Stay Hydrated

When running in cold weather you will usually sweat less than you would if the temperature outside was higher and this may lead you to believe that you aren’t becoming dehydrated. However it’s essential to drink water even when running in winter and even if you don’t feel like you’re losing moisture through sweat and allowing yourself to become dehydrated will have a detrimental effect to your body and your skin which could become dry and cracked in response to not having enough fluid.

The best foods for healthy skin

www.pexels.com

As well as a good skin care routine, one way to help your skin look great is through your diet. Our skin is a reflection of what we eat, so keeping processed foods, take-aways and sugar intake low, and drinking plenty of water is the first step to glowing skin.

But you can take it further and add some of these foods into your diet and we think when you smile in the mirror next, you will love what you see.

Essential fatty acids
Things like omega-3 fatty acids are great for your skin, eyes and can help keep inflammation at bay as well.  Having just two portions of fatty fish like salmon, anchovies, kippers, sardines, mackerel, and wild trout a week can make a glowing difference to your skin. If you are veggie or vegan, eating walnuts, chia seeds and hemp seed oil will give you a healthy boost, or go for a supplement that’s rich in algal oil.

Coconut oil
Coconut oil is great for healthy skin and you can use it to cook with or as a moisturiser. You don’t need a lot because a little goes a long way, but give it a go and not only will it make your food better but it’ll make your skin soft and smooth and your hair will shine like never before.

Avocado
These green fruits are really rich in the essential oils and B vitamins that nourish the skin and help it to glow with health. Whether you have with eggs, smash on toast or use as a face mask, make sure the odd avocado is on your shopping list.

Green, leafy vegetables
Green leafy vegetables come packed with antioxidants, fibre and age-fighting phytochemicals as well as vitamin C and E – who knew? Try to go for three servings of either watercress, rocket, spinach, baby leaf salad or kale a day by adding to your main meals or popping in a skin glowing green smoothie.

Orange fruit and veg
Carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, butternut squash, orange peppers, mango and oranges come with the vitamin A that helps to repair skin tissue and protects against the sun and free radicals that can cause wrinkles, pigmentation and uneven skin tone. The colour gives you a glow as well so enjoy a few portions everyday.

Flaxseeds
These little gems are packed with omega-3 fatty acids so sprinkle onto yogurt and into smoothies to get rid of spots and to smooth fine lines.

Green tea
As well as drinking water during the day, you might want to try adding a cup or two of green tea as well. This natural hot drink reduces redness, swelling and irritation and is meant to be one of the best ways to deal with inflammation. It can be strong for newbies, so dunk and go to start with but as you get used to the bitter taste, and the impact it has on your skin, steep the bag for longer and let the goodness get to work.

Smooth Skin – 5 Holy Grail Products

Smooth Skin - 5 Holy Grail Products
Photo by Jovaughn Stephens on Unsplash

The media really has a lot to answer for when it comes to how we perceive what our skin should look like. Images which have been pored over by a specialist with retouching software would lead us to believe that we’re the only people on the planet whose skin isn’t as smooth as silk. However, it’s actually incredibly unusual for humans to have completely smooth, blemish-free, imperfection-free skin and most people who have a very smooth complexion have managed to get there with a strict regime of targeted products. We’ve curated a list of 5 such products which can help you to achieve smooth skin from top to toe.

Decleor 1000 Grains Body Exfoliator

Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream

This skin smoothing cream from Dermalogica is actually their best selling moisturiser and now features and new Active HydraMesh technology. It features a state-of-the-art complex that infuses skin with moisture and helps to shield the skin’s natural biome, locking in moisture and protecting the skins beneficial bacteria. It’s really common for people to neglect the skin on their body while they’re busy concentrating on their facial complexion, however Dermalogica has produced this cream specifically for smoothing and hydrating the skin of your body. It contains skin nourishing oils which hydrate and relieve dryness well aromatic orange oil and Chinese green tea to soothe and soften the skin.

Vital vitamins for vegans

www.pexels.comWith more and more people turning to a plant-based diet, it is key to note that excluding food groups can lead to health problems due to deficiencies in vitamins and minerals, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

A vegan diet has many health benefits as it is low in saturated fats and sugar as well as being rich in antioxidants, but we want to flag the nutrients that you need to ensure you are as be as kind to yourself as the environment by making the switch.

Calcium
Calcium is key if you want to keep your bones, teeth and nervous system strong. While you can’t carry on with regular dairy products, you can get your calcium fix from fortified bread and cereals as well as kale, greens, dried figs, chia seeds and almonds. Blend up a smoothie and you will be calcium strong all day long.

Iron
We all need iron as it carries the red blood cells that move oxygen around our bodies and if we don’t get enough, we can feel sluggish and tired.  Chickpeas, tofu, chia seeds, lentils, linseeds, pumpkin seeds, dried apricots, figs and quinoa are great sources of iron for all of us and they are brilliant at packing out vegan meals and make them taste good, too. It’s also worth noting that vitamin C can help with the absorption of iron so eating broccoli, oranges, red peppers, berries and grapefruit with the foods above, will take you from feeling good to feeling great.

Omega-3 fatty acids
You might not know this, and why should you, but omega-3 and 6 fatty acids aren’t produced by our bodies, so we need to get them from our diet. If you are vegan, then going for linseed, pumpkin and sunflower seeds is a good idea and they are easy to use in lots of ways, while soya spreads, vegetable oil and walnuts also pack a fatty acid punch.

Protein
There are no two ways about it – we need protein for the repair and growth of muscles and bones, and it is pretty good at whizzing oxygen around our bodies too. The good news is that protein is found in non-dairy milk, cheese and yoghurt as well as in tofu, lentils, nuts, nut butters, pulses and some veggies. You ideally need to have protein with every meal but given the choice and versatility, we don’t think this will be much of a problem.

Selenium
Selenium helps maintain healthy hair, nails and skin and it’s pretty nifty when it comes to looking after male fertility. Onions, tomatoes, broccoli, garlic and brown rice are all full of it, and Brazil nuts have a high selenium content with just two a day giving you the goodness you need.

Vitamin B12
Fighting tiredness, keeping our nervous system and blood cells healthy are just some of the benefits of vitamin B12 but it is usually found in meat, fish and dairy products, so vegans need to find alternatives to gain this vital vitamin. Vegan-friendly milks, spreads, yeast extracts and fortified breakfast cereals come packed with B12 so try to include them each day, but if you can’t, then it is worth taking a vitamin B12 supplement and stocking up that way.

Vitamin D
Sunlight is the main source of vitamin D, but in the UK it can be difficult to get as much as we need and even more so in the winter. To deal with this, a vegan-friendly supplement may be the answer and be sure to read the ingredients so you buy something free from animal sources.

Zinc
Zinc, what is this beauty good for? Well, it helps with muscle growth and repair and keeps our skin looking and feeling good. Goods ways to get zinc are from cashews, almonds, walnuts, chickpeas, beans, and pumpkin seeds, so buy in bulk and add to soups, stews and smoothies or eat as snacks on the go.

We hope this makes life as a healthy vegan easier, but if you need more help your GP or local health food shop will be able to help you make the best choices you can.

Ideas for Meat Free Monday

www.pexels.comIt’s a bit of a buzz phrase, but Meat Free Monday is becoming quite a ‘thing’.

While you might feel nervous about giving up that Monday roast or sausage and mash supper, there are some great ways that you can swap out meat, and not only do the environment a favour but your health and wellbeing too.  We have a couple of easy recipes that you might like so much, that you might start to go meat free more often.

Spicy noodle salad

This is an easy-to-make, nutritious, colourful Japanese noodle salad that warms with you with the spices and leaves you with a glow. To feed you and your friends or family, you will need:

150g of udon noodles

6 tomatoes

6 stems of broccoli (boiled or steamed)

A handful of sugar snap peas (boiled or steamed)

50g of red cabbage

¼ cup of edamame beans (boiled)

1 cup of mixed salad leaves

½ tbsp of peanut oil

1 large carrot, sliced

1 onion, grated

2cm of peeled ginger

80ml of olive oil

50ml of dark soy sauce

50ml of rice vinegar

1tbsp of honey

Bring a pot of water to the boil and cook the noodles for around seven minutes.  As the noodles cook, add a cup of cold water to the pot once or twice to improve their texture. Once cooked, drain the noodles and rinse with cold water, then mix with peanut oil and put them in a bowl.

For the dressing, place the carrot, onion, ginger, olive oil, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and honey into a food processor and mix until smooth. Slice the tomatoes and add these and the salad leaves to the noodles before you pour on the dressing. For added taste add sesame seeds, thinly sliced spring onions and additional vegetables or tofu for added goodness and protein

With this one, make sure no one eating has a peanut allergy, and if they do swap for a different oil

Spicy Carrot Laska

Curries are a fantastic way to get a nutrient-rich meal without meat appearing and this is a favourite for us. You will need:

600ml of water

1 vegetable stock cube

4 tablespoons of Malaysian Laksa Paste (you will find this in most supermarkets)

400ml tin of coconut milk

200g of brown rice noodles

200g of carrots, grated

300g of courgettes, grated

200g of green beans, finely chopped

½ a red chilli, finely chopped

Bring the water to the boil in a large saucepan and dissolve the stock cube before adding the Laksa paste and coconut milk and let the mix simmer. Next add the noodles and stir for several minutes, followed by the vegetables. Simmer for another five minutes so the flavours marry for a few minutes before dividing among bowls. Scatter the chilli over each serving, along with a little chopped coriander. Grate over some apple and finish with a squeeze of fresh lime juice. If you want an earthy twist, add some celeriac, parsnip or even beetroot and enjoy a delicious meat free meal.

Root Veg Stew

Who doesn’t love a hearty stew in the middle of winter? This one is super easy to make, really tasty to eat and if you batch cook you will have meat free leftovers for lunch. For this veggie treat, you will need:

1 onion, finely chopped

2 carrots, sliced

2 stalks of celery, finely chopped

1 apple, grated

2 red peppers, sliced and deseeded

2 large tins of tomatoes

1 tin of lentils

150-200ml of vegetable stock

Smoked paprika

Oregano

Cumin seeds

Coriander seeds

Sage and Thyme

Put all the vegetables, except the tomatoes in a pan and sauté for a few minutes on a low heat with the spices of your choice – we have suggested some that work well in our list, but go for maybe two or three.

Next add in the tomatoes and lentils, season with salt and black pepper and taste to check it’s ok.

Now leave to simmer for around half an hour and then eat with jacket potatoes or toasted sourdough bread.

Got a meat free recipe we need to know about – send it over, we are keen to add more to our meat free list.
