Spring smoothies

ID-100362204With the nights becoming lighter, the sun a little brighter, and foods fresher than ever, what better time to start making smoothies than now?

Whilst it isn’t quite bikini weather, spring is in the air and it is time to ditch piping hot porridge and hearty soups and start to sip on seasonal smoothies instead.

There are hundreds of recipes out there but we wanted to share our favourites, which are not only quick and easy to make, but full of goodness and delicious to drink.

We suggest that you use organic products whenever you can and wash all fruit and vegetables before you use them.

The Super-Smoothie
We think that this is the king of green smoothies. Packed with beautifying, cleansing spinach, avocado, lettuce, lemon and chia seeds, you will be glowing from the inside out after drinking one of these beauties.

Whilst this smoothie is veg heavy there is a sweetness that comes from the dates, but nothing else!

Ingredients
2 cups of mineral water
1 avocado (pitted and peeled from the flesh)
1 head of romaine lettuce
3 cups of spinach
3 medjool dates
The juice of one lemon
2 tbsp of chia seeds (soak for ten minutes before you use)

Directions
Blend all the ingredients in the order listed above until a thick, shake-like consistency is reached. If this is too thick for you, add a little more water or ice and take it down a little.

Enjoy this drink straight away or it will keep in the fridge for a day. You can also freeze this smoothie in batches and enjoy it as and when you fancy.

Breakfast Smoothie
If you have a busy day ahead of you but time isn’t on your side, a smoothie that is rich in brain nourishing ingredients is the perfect answer.

This recipe is jam-packed with fruit, fibre and organic goodness that will keep you full until lunchtime.

Ingredients
1 cup of frozen blueberries (organic if you can find them)
2 tablespoons of organic flaxseeds (raw)
2 tablespoons of chia seeds (soak for ten minutes before you use)
1 scoop hemp protein powder
1 large banana, peeled and chopped
½ an avocado
½ cup of almond milk
2 teaspoons of honey

Instructions
Put all the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. You can ice if you this to be extra cold. Pour into a glass or a beaker with lid and you can enjoy it on the go.

The super vibrant smoothie
This is a delicious smoothie that makes the perfect afternoon snack and is so much better than reaching for a packet of crisps of sugar filled piece of cake.

Ingredients
1 small cucumber
1 handful of spinach
1 handful of strawberries (remove the stork)
1 kiwi
1 apple, peeled and cored
1 teaspoon of grated ginger
The juice of one lime
1 teaspoon of honey
1 cup of mineral water
Ice cubes

Instructions
Partly peel the cucumber (remove about 60% of the peel) then put all the ingredients in the blender and mix until you have the desired consistency.

Taste and add more hone if needed. Enjoy and feel your skin glow!

We do suggest that you mix and match ingredients and to keep things interesting, keep these staples in your kitchen and add to boost the goodness and taste.

  • Hemp seeds are a fantastic vegan protein source with a mild, nutty flavour.
  • Flaxseeds are super-rich in fibre, protein, and omega-3s.
  • Sunflower seeds give a boost of copper and magnesium
  • Chia seeds are really popular at the moment because not only are they fibre loaded and protein-rich, which helps keep blood sugar levels stable they also take on flavour of other ingredients given a really excellent smoothie.
