Late summer has brought an unexpected scorching heatwave to the UK, leaving many of us basking in the sunshine. While we’re all for enjoying the warmth, these soaring temperatures can take a toll on our skin. Excessive heat and sun exposure can lead to a host of skincare concerns, from sunburn to dehydration. But fret not; we’ve got you covered with five essential skincare solutions to help you beat the heat and keep your skin happy and healthy during this unexpected heatwave.

Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen

First things first: sun protection is non-negotiable during a heatwave. The sun’s UV rays are at their strongest, so applying sunscreen is paramount. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and be diligent about reapplying it every two hours, especially if you’re spending time outdoors. Don’t forget those easy-to-miss spots like your ears, neck, and the tops of your feet. A sun hat and sunglasses are also stylish accessories that provide extra protection.

Stay Hydrated Inside and Out

High temperatures can lead to increased perspiration, which means your body loses more fluids. To combat dehydration, drink plenty of water throughout the day. Additionally, use a hydrating facial mist or thermal water spray to refresh and cool your skin. Look for products containing hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or aloe vera to lock in moisture and soothe any sun-exposed areas.

Lightweight and Hydrating Skincare Products

Swap out heavy moisturisers and rich creams for lightweight, oil-free alternatives during a heatwave. Gel-based moisturisers and serums are excellent choices, as they provide hydration without feeling greasy on the skin. Incorporate products with antioxidant-rich ingredients like vitamin C or green tea extract to protect your skin from environmental damage.

Cool Down with Cold Compresses

If you’re dealing with sunburn or irritated skin, cold compresses can provide immediate relief. Soak a clean cloth in cold water and gently press it onto affected areas. Even better, use an ice roller which has been chilled in advance. You can also add a few drops of lavender or chamomile essential oil to the water for added soothing benefits. Just be sure not to rub the skin, as this can further irritate it.

Avoid Heavy Makeup

During a heatwave, it’s best to keep makeup light and minimal. Heavy makeup can clog pores and lead to breakouts, especially when your skin is already battling the heat. Opt for a tinted primer or a lightweight, breathable foundation. Waterproof mascara and a touch of lip balm with SPF can complete your summer-friendly look without feeling too heavy on your skin.
