Our Top Eye Make Up Tips

Eye Liner with a SpoonApplying eye make-up can be a tricky business and getting it just right takes a lot of practise. We’ve lost count of the amount of times that we’ve applied a slick of mascara, only to blink too hard and smudge it everywhere! We thought we’d gather together our top tips for applying eye make up to help you to perfect your techniques and take your eyes to the next level.

Erase Lines

Applying make up to eyes with crow’s feet and fine lines can be a tricky business; the skin tends to be softer which means it moves under the brush when you try to sweep the applicator across the area and fine lines can cause colour to bleed. Using a plumping eye cream like Decleor Regenerating Eye and Lip Cream will reduce lines and make it a lot easier to apply your make up.

Prime the Area

Primer is an absolute must before applying eye make-up as it mattifies the area, giving you the perfect surface on which to apply shadow. Dermalogica HydraBlur Primer actually blurs the skins uneven areas and provides light coverage, as well as hydrating the skin and refining pores.

Use a Spoon

Creating the perfect flick with an eyeliner pen or pencil is very difficult to do freehand. Try using the back edge of a spoon as a guideline; hold it against your eye and literally use the spoon as a stencil for your lines. You’ll create the perfect feline flick with absolutely no effort at all.

Vaseline

If you do happen to make a mistake or smudge your eyeliner or mascara, there IS a way to rectify things without needing to remove the whole lot and start again. Use a cotton bud dipped into a little bit of Vaseline like an eraser in areas with smudges. It will allow you to remove the offending smudge with total precision without fluffing up the rest of your hard work.

Quality Brushes

More often than not, the brushes and applicators which come with eye make-up are a little bit…naff! Investing in a decent set of brushes will really up your eye make-up game and will allow you to blend and build your make up to a much better degree of accuracy. They don’t have to be mega expensive, but opting for the best ones you can afford is a really good way to give your eyes that extra 10%.
